How long can you drive with an expired ITP? What documents are required and how much does the Periodic Technical Inspection cost

The Periodic Technical Inspection is mandatory for all types of vehicles, including trailers and caravans. This is done for some cars even twice a year. Here’s how long you can drive with the expired ITP and what documents are needed to redo the Technical Inspection.

The Periodic Technical Inspection must be treated very carefully, for several reasons.

First of all, even a seemingly trivial deficiency can lead to the rejection of the vehicle, and the car will remain without ITP.

Also, the fines that drivers risk if they drive with an expired ITP should not be ignored.

How long can you drive with an expired ITP?

Those who forget to redo the Periodic Technical Inspection or postpone it and drive with an expired ITP risk being fined twice.

The law states that a car’s registration is automatically suspended when its MOT expires. This means that, from that moment on, the driver was driving an unregistered car.

Thus, if you are caught with an expired ITP, you will receive two fines at the same time. A penalty for driving a car without a valid inspection, which is between 1,485 lei and 3,300 lei. And the second for driving a car whose registration was suspended. In which case the fine is 3,300 lei.

Thus, if you are caught with an expired ITP, the total fine can reach 6,600 lei, and the minimum 4,785. In addition, the right to drive for that vehicle is suspended on the spot.

The validity of the ITP is mentioned in the vehicle receipt. After exceeding that date, the Technical Inspection is considered to have expired. Therefore, you cannot drive for even one day without having a valid ITP.

What is the validity of ITP in 2024

The Periodic Technical Inspection has a limited validity, depending on the vehicle’s year of manufacture, the number of seats, its destination and its dimensions.

What documents are required and how much does the Periodic Technical Inspection cost

Depending on the type of vehicle for which the Periodic Technical Inspection is performed, the cost is generally between 100 and 250 lei. Each service station has its own tariff.

For a small or medium class car, for example, the ITP cost is around 150 lei.

The necessary documents for performing the ITP in 2024 are:

  • the vehicle’s registration certificate (car license plate);
  • the identity card of the driver;
  • the RCA policy valid at the date of the inspection;
  • vehicle identity card (CIV).

If the car is owned by a leasing company, these documents can also be accompanied by a stamped copy of the CIV, with the mention “in accordance with the original”.
