How many jobs have already been lost in the European car industry?

The crisis in the European car industry claimed many victims, including Mürdter Group, Recaro and AE Group. Bosch also said it wants to cut 7,000 jobs and cut wages and hours in the company’s automotive division.

Germany is the country most affected by the crisis, and now the German trade association Clepa has compiled a list of exactly how many jobs have disappeared in the European automotive industry in recent years. The company’s analysis shows that since 2020, 86,000 jobs have disappeared, and 30,000 new jobs have been created. Thus, 56,000 jobs disappeared forever, and in the first part of 2024 alone, it was announced that 32,000 jobs in various companies would be cut. These are the numbers that exceed the worst time during the pandemic, it says Business Week.

Of the new jobs created since 2020, 19,000 are related to electric cars. Clepas General Secretary Benjamin Kriger is worried about the figures and is now warning that the EU must do something before it is too late. The job losses don’t seem to stop there as it’s becoming increasingly clear that Audi’s electric car factory in Brussels is likely to close. More than 3,000 employees will lose their jobs because no one wants to buy the factory, and Audi does not have a new car model to produce at the plant.
