Many drivers have become afraid to eat or take certain drugs in order not to test positive. Here’s how much it costs to take a quick drug test before you get behind the wheel.
For more than a year, the Police started a real hunt against drivers who drive under the influence of drugs.
However, the devices used by the authorities only determine if certain substances are found in the drivers’ saliva samples. But, I cannot determine in what quantity it is present in the body, nor if it affects the driver’s ability to drive.
How the Traffic Police do a quick drug test
The police have the right to ask any driver to submit to a drug test. This is a quick way to determine if the driver has consumed prohibited substances.
If he doesn’t agree, he can refuse and then he will be taken by the police to the IML to have a blood sample taken.
If he agrees to the rapid test, the driver will have saliva samples taken. They will be inserted into a specialized device which, through a series of chemical reactions, will determine if certain prohibited substances are present in the saliva.
Specifically, the presence of the following substances, including their derivatives, is analyzed:
- cocaine;
- opiates;
- benzodiazepane;
- cannabis;
- amphetamine;
- methamphetamine;
- methadone;
- ketamine.
If the result is negative for all 8 substances, the driver is free to go. If it is positive for even one substance, the driver is obliged to go to the Institute of Forensic Medicine, accompanied by a police officer, to have a blood sample collected.
How long do you stay without a license if you test positive on a rapid drug test?
According to the new law, adopted in July, if a driver comes out positive in the rapid drug test, he remains without a license.
Later, the blood test will determine if the person in question has consumed drugs or if the result is a false-positive one.
On average, about a quarter of these rapid tests turned out to be false positives. That is, although the saliva sample contained that prohibited substance, it either did not come from a drug or medicine, or it had been metabolized in the body.
However, the right to drive cannot be suspended for more than 72 hours if the blood results are not ready. Which means that drivers who come out positive on the rapid drug test, get their license back within 3 days at the most from the date they were tested.
If it is later determined, however, that he has used drugs, his license will be suspended again and the criminal investigation will continue.
How much does it cost to take a rapid drug test?
If you don’t want to be careful every time you get behind the wheel, you can take a quick drug test yourself. Some tests analyze the presence of banned substances in saliva, others can analyze urine.
Prices vary quite a bit, depending on the number of substances detected or the number of tests in a package.
A rapid drug test, similar to that of the police, is about 200 lei/set. It identifies 8 types of substances and contains 3 saliva analysis drug tests.
Another serum of 5 rapid tests, but which only detects the presence of THC/Marijuana in the urine, costs 70 lei. So is a single rapid test that detects 18 different substances.
So, performing such rapid tests daily would be quite expensive. That’s why it’s better to know which foods and drugs might come out positive on drugtest.
How long do drugs stay in the body?
A drug, regardless of its type, is not eliminated from the body as soon as its effect has passed.
It depends on each person’s metabolism, body mass, degree of hydration, amount and frequency of use of the respective drug.
Here’s how long various substances and drugs stay in the body:
- Cannabis – 30 days;
- Methamphetamines – 6 days;
- Morphine – 6 days;
- Alcohol – 5 days;
- Barbiturates – 5 days;
- Cocaine, heroin, MDMA – 4 days;
- Amphetamines – 3 days;
- LSD – 3 zile.
This represents the average metabolism time of substances, which can increase or decrease depending on the body of each person.
Drugs and foods that drugtest positive
A simple poppy seed pie can generate a positive drug test result.
There is also a risk that the test will be positive if you have taken cough syrup or a cold pill. That’s why the doctors at the CFR Timișoara hospital have drawn up a list of drugs that come out positive in the drugtest.
Policeman Tavi Pertea did an experiment to see how much poppy is needed for a drug test to come out positive.
