RCA 2025 insurance: Why it is mandatory and what risks its lack entails
RCA insurance plays an essential role in the event of a road accident.
By concluding it, the insurance company undertakes to cover the damages caused as a result of a road incident. Compensation is granted by the insurance company of the driver who is at fault for the road accident. Damages are paid to those who suffered as a result of the road accident.
These damages may include:
- damage to the vehicle or other property;
- personal injury and death, including financial support for medical treatment or compensation for affected families.
Thus, the RCA policy protects both the injured persons, ensuring compensation for the damages, and the driver responsible for the accident, by avoiding major personal expenses.
The RCA policy is mandatory for all vehicles driving on public roads in Romania. And those who do not take out a car insurance contract risk significant penalties.
How much is the fine for not having the RCA policy?
According to Law no. 132/2017, possession of a valid RCA policy is mandatory for all vehicles registered in Romania.
If you are stopped by the Police, you have the obligation to present, in physical or electronic format (email/photo), the valid RCA policy.
If you do not have car insurance, the fine for not having the RCA policy is between 1,000 and 2,000 lei. In addition, the registration certificate will be retained.
How much does RCA insurance cost in 2025?
The Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) has increased the reference rates for RCA policies.
Thus, car insurance will be higher by up to 30%, depending on the age of the driver, the characteristics of the vehicle and the place of residence.
Factors influencing the price of the RCA policy in 2025:
- age of the driver – people under 30 have higher rates because they are at a higher risk of accidents;
- engine power – the higher the power, the higher the costs;
- geographical area – in Bucharest and Ilfov the price of RCA is higher than in the rest of the country, due to the increased risk of accidents.
For example, a person who has not turned 30 years old and lives in Bucharest or Ilfov will pay more than 5,200 lei for RCA insurance if he has a car with a power exceeding 300 Kw.
Instead, a person aged between 51 and 60, who lives in any other county and drives a car with an engine of less than 50 Kw, will pay a little over 1,000 lei for compulsory car insurance.
These examples are for a policy that is valid for one year. Rates may vary, however, from one insurance company to another. But also depending on the driver’s damage history.
