How much does it cost you to charge your electric car in Romania compared to other countries

Ziarul Financiar found out how much it costs to charge an electric car if you want to travel 100 kilometers. The conclusion: in Romania the cost is double compared to Portugal and Finland, but almost half compared to Norway

Charging an electric car for 25 minutes to travel 100 km costs about 9.8 euros in Romania, according to a graphic by Visual Capitalist citing data from the European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO). This graph shows the average cost of charging an electric car for 25 minutes per 100 km at a public charging station in different European countries.

To account for the difference between electric cars, a Tesla Model 3 was considered for this data set. Price information was obtained from public fast charging stations, and then EAFO calculated the average price per country.

Electric car registrations have decreased in Romania

Thus, the cheapest charging of an electric car to travel 100 km is in Iceland (2.9 euros), Portugal (3.2 euros) and Finland (4.6 euros). On the other hand, at the opposite pole are countries like Norway or Slovenia, where the price jumps to 17 euros per charge needed to drive 100 km by car.

And the prices also differ from the availability of charging solutions, but also, obviously, from the cost of energy in each country. Moreover, at the European level in the first nine months of this year, the registrations of electric cars were 5.8% below the similar period in 2023, according to the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA), mainly due to Germany, where the decrease was 28.6% due to the elimination of bonuses for electrics.

In Romania, in the first ten months of the year, electric vehicle registrations fell by 38% compared to the same period in 2023, according to data from the Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Importers (APIA). Thus, fully electric cars have a 4.9% market share in October 2024, compared to October 2023, when they represented 10%, while plug-in hybrid cars have a 5% market share , compared to October 2023, when they represented 4.3%.
