We believe that you all already know that from the beginning of October, according to our regulations, the import of used cars from America is also allowed, i.e. USA. Also, by now you are probably familiar with the basic differences between cars manufactured for the American market compared to those manufactured for the EU and what all must be done in order for the “Americans” to adapt to the standards or uniform technical conditions applied in to our country.
That is why we are now dealing with one, equally important aspect of this topic, and that is the price. How much does it roughly cost to deliver a car from America to Serbia and how is it actually done?
In order to get the most accurate answers to these questions, we turned to Boro Nastasić, the president of the old-timer club “Belgrade”, a man who has many years of experience importing cars from America. He explains to Used Cars that there are several options, but one of the most common is to ship the vehicles from a port in New Jersey.
“There is a company that organizes transport all the way to Belgrade. Cars are loaded into containers and arrive from New Jersey to one of the surrounding ports such as Bar, Rijeka or Kopar. Then they are delivered to Serbia. As far as I know, the prices for such a type of transport range from 1,500 to 1,700 dollars, if several cars are being transported and if they are, so to speak, smaller in size. The cost of that service itself can be higher, but on the other hand, if the customer organizes the container and transport himself, the price can be significantly lower,” notes Bora Nastasić.
The logical question is why New Jersey? First of all, because the price of transportation is much more favorable compared to some other ports in the USA. Also, a good part of the cars are brought to New York and its surroundings, as well as some further cities, where our population is large, such as Chicago… However, the further the place of purchase of used cars is from the port from which the container departs, the higher the costs of transportation to the port .
“It is important for people who are thinking about importing to know that these “internal” costs in America range from 300 to 1,500 dollars, depending on which part of America the car arrives from, and that this cost is also calculated on customs, along with the price of the vehicle itself”, explains the interlocutor of “Used Cars”.
Another transport option is used in practice, which is transport in so-called open ships. In that case, the cars arrive at the port in Hamburg, and the price, according to Nastasić, ranges from 500 to 800 dollars. Again, it is certain that transportation from Hamburg to Serbia is not a small item, and there are also port costs…
Unfortunately, the expenses do not end there. Because, when the vehicle arrives in our country, it is necessary to pay customs duties (the customs rate is higher compared to vehicles arriving from the EU), freight forwarder services… Our interlocutor says that the total costs with customs duties and taxes, as well as costs during unloading and forwarding can amount to about 40% of the total value of the vehicle.
The costs of vehicle inspection in one of the authorized institutions by the Agency for Traffic Safety (eg the Center for Motor Vehicles AMSS is authorized) cannot be ignored either, in terms of compliance with standards. As we were told unofficially, the inspection of the vehicle in the authorized laboratories will be charged 70,000 dinars, and we will only find out how much the modifications in the service centers and the alignment with our uniform technical conditions will cost. It is certain that the price range will be large, because it is not the same to modify light groups or blinkers on one of the Kia and Porsche models…
So, when everything is added up, without several thousand euros of accompanying costs, it is almost impossible to deliver a car from the USA to Serbia. The question that arises is whether it will even be profitable to import used cars whose price is several thousand euros and who will be interested in embarking on this adventure.
