Traffic fines are increasing significantly, starting this year, along with the increase in the minimum wage. But another reason is the Government’s decision not to cap the fine point. For example, if you exceed the speed by 51 KM/h, the fine will be several hundred lei higher in 2025 than in the previous year.
The Romanian government decided not to cap the fine point in 2025.
So, since the first day of the new year, traffic fines have increased by approximately 20% compared to last year.
How much is the traffic fine in 2025
Drivers will pay much higher fines in 2025.
One fine point has a value of 5% of the gross minimum wage per country. Thus, under the conditions in which the minimum income was increased, starting from January 1, 2025, to the value of 4,050 lei, one fine point is 202.5 lei.
The traffic fine in 2025 thus has the following value, depending on the class of sanctions:
- class I (2 – 3 fine points) = 405 lei – 607.5 lei;
- second class (4 – 5 fine points) = 810 lei – 1012.5 lei;
- third class (6 – 8 fine points) = 1,215 lei – 1,620 lei;
- class IV (9 – 20 fine points) = 1,822.5 lei – 4,050 lei;
- 5th class (21 – 100 fine points) = 4,252.5 lei – 20,250 lei.
Therefore, the smallest traffic fine will be over 400 lei, and the highest one will exceed 20,000 lei. In the case of individuals, the maximum traffic fine will be 4,050 lei, i.e. exactly the amount of the minimum gross salary.
What is the speed limit on Romanian roads?
The speed limits allowed in Romania are:
- 130 km/h on the highway;
- 120 km/h on express roads;
- 100 km/h on European roads;
- 90 km/h on the other categories of roads (national or county);
- 50 km/h in the locality.
But, the maximum speed imposed may be lower or higher, depending on the area that road crosses. For example, in the locality, the speed limit near pedestrian crossings can be reduced to 30 km/h.
Also, on the highway, if in areas with dangerous turns or where there is an increased risk of accidents, the maximum speed limit can be reduced to 80 km/h.
How much is the fine, in 2025, if you exceed the speed by 51 KM/h?
Exceeding the speed limit is punishable by a fine and, in certain cases, suspension of the driver’s license. Penalties between 2 and 20 fine points are applied for speeding.
Sanctions applied depending on the speed with which you exceeded the legal limit:
- 10 – 20 km/h: 2 – 3 fine points;
- 21 – 30 km/h: 4 – 5 fine points;
- 31 – 40 km/h: 6 – 8 fine points;
- 41 – 50 km/h: 9 – 20 fine points;
- over 50 km/h: 9 – 20 fine points + driving license suspension for 90 days;
- over 70 km/h: 9 – 20 penalty points + driving license suspension for 120 days.
So, if you exceed the speed by 51 km/h, the fine will be between 1,822.5 lei and 4,050 lei. A significant increase compared to 2024, when for this violation the fine varied between 1,485 and 3,300 lei.
In addition, the right to drive a motor vehicle will be suspended for a period of 3 months.
