How much would it cost to fill up the car with the realignment of excise duties?

Much ado about nothing? Probably not, because the now famous realignment of excise duties on petrol and dieselin the end, it should happen. We don’t know when, but ministers Giorgetti and Pichetto Fratin promised it, recalling that the rate on diesel, lower than that on green fuel, is one of the “environmentally harmful subsidies” and a balance is needed to avoid infringement procedures of the Italy facing the European Union.

The discussion, however, is postponed, given that the Council of Ministers (Cdm) on Tuesday 15 October preliminarily approved a “legislative decree for the revision of the provisions on excise duties” which concerns only alcohol, tobacco, energy and lubricating oils .

When its time comes, tax convergence will present itself – explains Deputy Minister Rixi a Il Sole 24 Ore – as “a middle way, that is, decreasing the cost of petrol and increasing the cost of diesel, therefore a zero-cost operation, which will mean 1 cent per liter per year for five years, increasing or decreasing”. But how much more or less would motorists spend on a full tank of fuel? Almost 3.5 euros. We see.

Excise taxes and fuel prices today

To understand the numbers (or rather, the number), let’s take an example considering the expected evolution of excise duties and taxes fuel prices today (Wednesday 16 October) applied to one of the best-selling cars in Italy with both petrol and diesel engines: the Volkswagen T-Roc.

Diesel
0,617 €/l

1,913 €/l
Diesel self-service
1,657 €/l
Diesel served

A full tank of the German SUV costs now from approximately 83 to 96 eurosbased on engine and type of refueling (self-service or served).

The announced realignment would bring both excise taxes to 67 cents per litre (more precisely 0,673 €/l), with an increase for diesel and a decrease for petrol of 0.55 cents per liter (0.0555 €/l), for a total of 1 cent per liter (0.111 €/l). When recalculating fuel prices, VAT must also be included.

In the end, here’s how a driver’s spending would change with a Volkswagen T-Roc. The cost always varies 3,4 europositively (i.e. as a saving) for those who drive a petrol car, or negatively (as an increase) for those who drive a diesel car. In fact, the thresholds go to around 85-93 euros. Now it’s a matter of time.
