In the first half of the year in the European Union, wind and solar power plants overtook fossil fuels in the production of electricity for the first time. Serbia’s plan is to increase the share of renewable energy three times by 2040. This is predicted by the new Energy Strategy, which entered the public debate.
Head of the team of consultants for the preparation of the Energy Development Study of Serbia, prof. Dejan Ivezić told RTS that the draft strategy is based on two phrases that are most often used in the document – energy security and green transition.
“The Republic of Serbia must at all times provide its citizens and the economy with a sufficient amount of energy and energy sources, and the idea is that the production of that energy should be maximally based on the use of renewable energy sources, that is, on the decarbonization of the energy sector,” stated Professor Ivezić.
He explained that a quick renunciation of electricity production from coal is not realistic, and that by 2040 this energy source will most certainly be in the energy mix.
“The idea is that coal is pushed out of production to the extent that renewable energy sources are included, so that the practical supply of electricity will never be called into question at any time,” said Ivezić.
He pointed out that there are scenarios in which in 2050 the production of electricity from coal will be phased out, but that this will depend a lot on other circumstances, such as technological development and capacity building, such as reversible hydroelectric power plants, which would enable the acceptance of significant amounts of renewable energy sources.
Professor Ivezić pointed out that the moratorium on the construction of nuclear power plants is still in force in Serbia, but that it seems that the political will is such that it will be lifted in some way soon.
“Nuclear energy and nuclear power plants fit ideally into this vision of decarbonized energy systems. In the draft strategy, we analyzed the recommendations of the International Nuclear Energy Agency in great detail and, in accordance with them, made a proposal so that the development of nuclear energy and technology in the Republic of Serbia could proceed in the coming decades, so that sometime after 2040, we may have online nuclear power plant”, said professor Ivezić.
Speaking about district heating systems, Ivezić emphasized that the strategy after 2040 envisages that neither fuel oil nor coal will be used for district heating purposes, and that the strategy foresees enabling district cooling, that is, transformation into district energy systems.
