The Balkan region is one of the most promising areas in Europe when it comes to the growth of solar energy. With excellent solar potential and a rapidly developing investment climate, the region is making progress in realizing its solar ambitions. This year, the third in a row, “Solarplaza Summit Balkan Solar & Storage” will once again bring together local and international actors to discuss business strategies and explore the main challenges and opportunities in the region.
With the current around 2 to 3 GW of installed PV capacity and a target of 30 GW by 2030, it is clear that there is a lot of untapped opportunity. The growth of solar energy in the region is being fueled by various factors, including the pursuit of EU integration, advances in solar technology and the growing desire for energy independence. To achieve its goals, the region will need to rely not only on solar energy, but also accelerate the development of the traditional solar market by integrating energy storage solutions from the very beginning.
Of course, the region cannot be completely viewed as one completely homogeneous opportunity. Each country in the Balkans is in a different phase of its solar story. For example, Bulgaria is a regional leader with significant increases in photovoltaic capacity, while Croatia is making solid progress towards its overall renewable energy targets. North Macedonia is making rapid progress in the development of solar capacity, significant progress has been made in the last two years. However, all countries in the region face similar obstacles, such as complex regulations, underdeveloped network infrastructures and slow permitting processes, which need to be addressed, and regional strategies are key to solving these problems.
For those who are ready to face the challenges, the markets of the Balkans offer a lot of opportunity. Recent changes in regulations are beginning to ease the process, and innovative projects, such as agrosolar, are showing how solar energy can go hand in hand with agriculture, making efficient use of land and resources. Also, energy storage projects can significantly improve the economic profitability and resilience of solar project development. Some countries in the Balkans have already shown great enthusiasm for energy storage, as evidenced by the Croatian Government’s investment of 500 million euros in the development of battery systems.
Observing the situation, it seems that the renewable energy sector in the Balkans is on the rise. It is expected that the region will experience a significant increase in solar capacity, which makes “Solarplaza Summit Balkan Solar & Storage” the perfect place to gain insight, establish contacts and participate in the energy transition. This event brings together everyone who is ready to improve the solar sector in the Balkans, including local and international project developers, investors, contractors, as well as service and product providers, together with experts from technical, legal and financial fields.
If you are involved in solar energy and storage or plan to get involved in this field, the summit in Zagreb is the key event for you. It is an opportunity to learn in detail about the current state of solar energy and energy storage in the Balkans, to understand all the challenges and opportunities and to contribute to shaping the future of solar energy in this region.
