how sturdy is a smartphone with two hinges?

The expensive Huawei Mate XT, the first smartphone with two folds in the screen, has been subjected to a notorious stress test. Spoiler alert: that didn’t end well for this innovative device.

Huawei Mate XT undergoes stress test

With the Mate XT, Huawei has released a unique smartphone. It has not one, but two creases in the screen. When fully unfolded, you have a tablet of about 10.2 inches in your hands.

That design does raise questions about sustainability. Happy was a YouTuber JerryRigEverything quickly to subject the Huawei Mate XT to its infamous stress test. As usual, this starts with investigating how easily the screen scratches.

Unfortunately, because the display of foldable smartphones is made of plastic, you can do this with your fingernail. The screen is extra vulnerable where the hinges are. Even if you gently bump into the device with a blunt object, pixels can be broken.

There is also good news, because sand and grit do not easily get into the hinges of the Mate XT. However, as expected, the most important part of this torture, the bend test, turns out to be catastrophic for the device. It breaks in two like a twig. The Huawei does give a warning if you bend it in the wrong direction. You could also see that as begging for his life…

Dutch release in 2025?

In September we read that Huawei wants to release the Mate XT worldwide next year. We dare not say whether the device will officially come to the Netherlands. If that is the case, you can expect a recommended retail price of more than 3,000 euros.

You get a unique device for this, but you have to handle it very carefully. Moreover, Huawei still faces US trade restrictions. The company is not allowed to offer Google Play services such as the Play Store, YouTube and Gmail on its smartphones. You can work around that, but it is difficult.
