How the mainstream media noticed its fall into irrelevance – Chapter 1

The election of Trump as the President of the USA brought many people a shock. After the first wave of complaints subsided, the search for causes began, more and more it is mentioned that the mainstream media has fallen into irrelevance. How could this happen?

After the election results came in and the complaints of celebrities and Democratic Party candidates died down, the investigation began as to what is responsible, what is the cause of the whole thing. The media mentions a lot of them, for example, that Harris was not particularly popular, that the Democrats should have looked for a candidate in the proper primaries, but that is a political matter and I am not that familiar with American politics. I am not commenting on it personally, and I also do not intend to deal with the question of what consequences Trump’s election will or will not have, we are more qualified for that.

Something else interested me, namely the media aspects – one of which I have already mentioned: The tragic fate of Peanut the squirrel. Today, however, no one talks about Peanut the squirrel anymore, they are looking for much bigger and more important factors that caused it not to turn out as expected. And these factors are emerging – and it’s a pretty big halo.

First of all, they are celebrities. Already in 2020, Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globe Awards told celebrities not to use this platform for political speeches, “take your little prize, thank your manager, God, and walk away.” Before the election, celebrities were again everywhere – and as it later turned out, many of the endorsements were paid, even quite handsomely paid. They appeared newsthat Oprah claimed a million US dollars, which Oprah denied.

But the campaign ended up costing a billion dollars – and it is virtually certain that some celebrities were paid either for direct support or for example for organizing concerts. But that’s not important, the important thing is that it didn’t work. The days when Americans used to listen to the opinions of American celebrities are largely gone.
