How the proposal to expand the German highway caused negative climate reactions

In Germany, a section of the A5 motorway outside the western city of Frankfurt has recently been proposed to be widened to allow for easier movement, due to an expected increase in traffic on one of the country’s busiest sections. Data show that by 2030, about 200,000 vehicles could pass through this highway on a daily basis.

Although among the reasons why the proposed idea should be realized, it is also found that emissions of harmful gases will be reduced by breaking the traffic density, not everyone agrees with this opinion. Namely, many citizens and experts do not share the view that the expansion of this road is a good thing.

As reported by the German and world media, such a decision could negatively contribute to the existing climate crisis, and it would also require billions of euros, which would also affect taxpayers.

Realization of the project, which would include an expansion to 10 lanes, would require the demolition of the houses located in that area. The creation of waste material, the release of emissions, as well as the construction of new houses would have an impact on the climate.

The expansion also means an increase in traffic, which, as stated, leads to more air pollution. Although there are high barriers that reduce noise, the traffic already exceeds the permitted levels in this sense, and expanding the lanes would increase the level further.

Also, this would threaten the protected area, which is especially important for the preservation of clean drinking water and its source.

According to information reported by the German media, the expansion of the section could have a negative impact on the bird reserve, taking into account the cutting of a large number of trees along the highway.

Part of the citizens and experts told the authorities that they do not agree with making such a decision.
