Estonian Björn Koop, who designed Kias in Germany for a long time and then worked at Mitsubishi in Japan, received important support from a colleague at the beginning of his career, who later made a dizzying flight.
Koop recalled in the radio show “Autojutut” how, during his internship at Volkswagen in the middle of the beginning, he crossed paths with the Danish car designer Anders Warming.
“I guess he felt sorry for me, that I keep plodding and sketching, but these sketches have no content and no good perspective, all the proportions are a bit out of place,” said Koop. “One day he came and sat down and said: „Okay, now let’s draw“. And then we started drawing. He showed me how he sketches – how to work with proportions, which angles to choose for drawing.”
Koop’s design technique soon began to improve, and everything else followed over time. Next, the Estonian from Valga practiced at Hyundai, then he had the opportunity to work at Kia’s newly created design center in Frankfurt. Currently, he has moved back to Estonia and heads the product design department of the Estonian Academy of Arts.
Anders Warming gained notoriety for designing BMWs, rose to chief designer at Rolls-Royce and was only recently promoted to an even higher position within the BMW Group. He is still one of Björn Koop’s favorite designers.
The show talked about Koop’s journey and behind the scenes of car design. Interviewed by Karl-Eduard Salumäe.

People’s rallies and sprints create the opportunity for many to take the first steps in motorsport and practice it at the so-called grassroots level, but as in any sport, success accompanies those who make the most effort and contribution.
