How to cope with dry autumn: Rituals and aromatherapy for our skin and soul

Summer ended overnight and we found ourselves in a deluge of rain, dark skies, early darkness, and the worries and responsibilities that come with the month of September. How does our mood change, the quality of our sleep and, following these aspects, the quality of our skin?

What can we do for ourselves so that we still look fresh and radiant, as we did in the summer, and above all, feel satisfied with ourselves?

“My psyche is very dependent on the weather. When it rains for a long time and I don’t see the sun, I don’t feel well. Likewise, the long white winter is slightly depressing for me. I need colors and lots of light. Autumn is starting for us. Well, luckily we don’t have to prepare for a long arctic night, do we?” laughs Tereza Nová, the founder of the cosmetic brand Florentine, which is dedicated to the development of skin care products during the dry autumn.

Cleanliness of the skin is the basis

It’s still the same whether it’s spring or winter. The skin should be properly cleansed every night with a two-phase cleansing. First, we apply an oil-based cleaner. We can have our favorite oil or stiffer cleansing balms. At first glance, we can associate boring skin cleaning with a pleasant ritual. The oil cleaner spreads very well with a konjac sponge. The sponge can be used to massage the entire skin, and thanks to its fine structure, the massage is really very pleasant. You soak the konjac sponge in hot water for a while and when it softens, it is ready to care for your skin. These sponges are natural and biodegradable, plastic-free, vegan and suitable for even the most sensitive skin. The oil cleanser perfectly removes make-up from the skin and dissolves various impurities that water cannot clean. Then use a water-based cleanser to remove excess oil and dirt residue. It can be your favorite floral water or mousse. If you choose flower water, you can already combine care with medicinal aromatherapy.

“I either make the hydrolats myself or I go to the aromatherapist Kateřina Kloudová, who represents the Japanese-French brand Florihana in the Czech Republic, to be sure. For me, the hydrolates and essential oils of this brand are the best quality products on the Czech market. This is simply pure experience at its best.” says Tereza Nová and goes on to describe which hydrolates she personally recommends.

Helichrysum relieves tension in the body

Helichrysum is suitable for mature and oily skin. Supports skin microcirculation, soothes skin prone to redness.

“Helichrysum smells interesting. It may not suit every woman, because the spicy scent is a bit reminiscent of curry. In my products, Helichrysum is included in the Aromatherapy Hydrating Serum to calm, relax and dispel gloomy moods before bed. Both helichrysum and the other contained essences have proven beneficial effects on the psyche, but the scent is simply not for everyone. But for me it is one of the best hydrolats,” Tereza describes.

Roses for women and their daughters

You can choose damask rose, centipede rose, white rose, but they all have one thing in common, they are purely feminine and delicate scents. Suitable for sensitive and dry skin. But the rose is also excellent during pregnancy and postpartum. Feel free to use pure bio hydrolat even to scent the spaces where you spend time with your baby. Rose calms and eases emotional tension, and Tereza lovingly recommends rose as the first hydrolat for your daughter.

Cornflower as an excellent hydrosol for sensitive skin and tired eyes

After all day in front of the computer screen, use it as an eye patch. It takes care of sensitive and dry skin prone to inflammation and enlarged veins.

Lavender has a very versatile use

Lavender Hydrosol is great for normal, combination and mature skin. Use after sunbathing, after shaving, refreshing, relaxing and inducing calmness before sleep.

Cist will please mature skin

Frankincense is suitable for mature skin. It improves its flexibility and strength. It is also suitable for enlarged pores.

Neroli, what about the exotic fresh scent of orange blossoms

Neroli has a beneficial effect against stress and relieves nervous tension. Always carry a small bottle in your purse.

“Yes, neroli and Bach essences – I always have a crisis mixture on hand! For me, these are must-haves for every day.” Tereza adds. The hydrosol is suitable for all skin types and soothes irritated skin.

Green tea with regenerative effects

Follow-up care is also important

We must not forget about the tonic, which can be replaced with a hydrosol that is just right for your skin. It will prepare it for the next step, and that will be proper nutrition, i.e. serum. It is of course necessary to choose the serum according to the needs of your skin.

Finding yours can be quite difficult. It is best to consult directly with a dermatologist or your beautician. Find out what kind of skin you have and what is bothering you – pigment spots, wrinkles or inflammation? Everything has a reason, and this way you will find the serum that is most suitable for you.

“Every season I need a different serum, like most women. I like oilier and more nourishing serums. As a cosmetics manufacturer, I also like developing them the most. Serums are such a passion of mine. This fall, I chose a lighter serum that works as an anti-stress for your skin. It’s just too much for me right now and this serum will give me all the nutrition in the foreground with the amazing antioxidant astaxanthin. Every woman needs to find out what her skin needs right now. No one says you will have one serum for life. The skin changes a lot,” adds Tereza Nova.

The smell should not only be pleasant, but also healing

“There are scents that can really promote healthy sleep or even lift your mood. And that is often needed now in the time of early darkness. I personally recommend petitgrain, essential oil from orange twigs, and for children, for example, mandarin orange. In my opinion, every cosmetic company should focus on aromatherapy today. It is completely unnecessary to put artificial fragrances into products, which, although they smell good to us, do not support our psyche. If cosmetics can be something more than just a scented product, why not do it normally?” Tereza Nová concludes the idea of autumn care.

Do a ritual with a cream or serum. Start with face yoga. It’s never too late to learn at least a few simple exercises. You can, of course, find them on YouTube, but you will achieve the best results if you take a comprehensive approach to face yoga and understand which muscles you are exercising and which ones need to be relaxed. Take care not only of your skin, but also of your mental health. Autumn and winter give us a great opportunity to close in and engage in more self-care.
