Windows automatic updates are a good way to keep Microsoft operating systems up to date. The problem is that for years they have become ‘a high risk exercise’. Microsoft continues to accumulate failed software updates and the final and “stable” version of Windows 11 24H2 has been no exception. A version that promised to be the turning point in terms of improving the adoption of the system (both due to new features and the entry of Windows 10 into its last year of its life cycle) and that It has arrived riddled with errors, some very serious. If the general recommendation for all types of software is to keep it updated with the latest code, especially for security reasons to prevent its vulnerabilities from being exploited, the reality of Windows invites us to use another type of strategy: wait and see. How to disable automatic Windows updates (permanently)
There are ways to postpone quality and feature updates without affecting security updates that will continue to be installed through monthly patches or extraordinary ones if necessary. It is very easy to do it from the Windows Update function present in the operating system settings.
But it is a mere temporary postponement. Once the time limit is reached you will need to install the latest updates in order to pause updates again. There are other more advanced methods that use the Windows registry to delay the update of features for up to 365 days or the group policy editor, an internal tool widely used by IT administrators that allows greater control of the operation of the PC, including the update management.
Y there is a more radical option using ‘Group Policies’ which disables automatic Windows updates permanently. If, like us, you don’t trust Microsoft’s disappointing software delivery one bit or you use equipment for production and can’t afford the slightest risk, it is the best option. - Access the services section. For example, by typing “services” in the search box. Or using the ‘services.msc’ command from the run function (Windows + R).
- In local services search for “Windows Update.”
- Right-click and access its properties.
- Under General > Startup Type, mark it as Disabled.
And that’s all. Simply restart your PC for the changes to take effect. Windows Update will not work automatically and you will get rid of its errors. Of course, the option is completely reversible when you consider it and more powerful than the mere pause of a few days that is usually insufficient given Microsoft’s inability to resolve the problems.
