Information about the entry and exit system (EES), which will soon be implemented at the external borders of the European Union, is now available in Serbian, the EU Mission in Serbia announced today.

Citizens of Serbia will in most cases be subject to this system when crossing EU borders and can now get clarifications on how the process will take place when implementation begins at the link

These and additional clarifications are also available on the official EES website The website will be updated as new information becomes available.

This system differs from the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which will come into force later and will require interested travelers to fill in a short form.

EES enters into force on November 10, 2024

The EES system should enter into force on November 10, while the next step will follow later, the ETIAS system, which will be revived next year, and which refers to obtaining approval to enter 30 European countries for people from 60 countries whose citizens are not visa required to enter the EU.

The EES system will be an automated IT system for registering travelers from third countries, both those who have short-term visas and travelers who do not need a visa, every time they cross the external border of the EU.

This system will register the person’s name, type of travel document, biometric data, such as fingerprints and facial photographs, date and place of entry and exit from the EU, with, as previously announced by the European Commission on its website, full respect for fundamental rights and protection data.

In this way, the EES will replace the current system of manual passport stamping, which is said to be time-consuming and does not provide reliable data on border crossings, nor does it enable a systematic systematic detection of overstaying. The system will also register cases of refusal to enter the EU.

ETIAS enters into force in 2025

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), due to be implemented from 2025, is a system for obtaining travel permits for citizens who do not need a visa to travel to 30 European countries for short-term stays.

Travelers will need to apply for a travel authorization by filling out a form via the ETIAS website or mobile app, and applying for an ETIAS travel permit will cost seven euros.

ETIAS travel permits are linked to the passenger’s passport and will be valid for up to three years or until the passport expires.

With a valid ETIAS travel permit, travelers will be able to enter the territory of European countries applying this system as often as they wish for short-term stays, which usually means up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

ETIAS, however, does not guarantee entry into a certain country, as the border guards, when the traveler arrives at a certain destination, will ask to show their passport and other documents and check whether they meet the entry requirements.
