How to fertilize plants in the fall?

“Which plants need fertilizer in the fall?” – asks Laimonis from Grobin.

In small gardens, it is best to purchase one of the so-called autumn fertilizers. They are suitable for both perennials and ornamental shrubs, roses, and berry bushes. Autumn fertilizer can be safely given to all garden plants.“, advises the gardener Iveta Berzinja from Pope.

First, those plants that winter worse are strengthened: various southern plants or those that are the brightest decorations of the garden.

Autumn fertilizer can begin to be applied in the second half of August and in September, while the plants continue to grow. In late autumn, when growth has already stopped, it is useless to apply fertilizer.

It is best to fertilize after rain, when the soil is moist. Then the fertilizer will dissolve well. However, in autumn, under lush foliage and bushes, dryness can remain even after rain. Therefore, it is best to apply fertilizer to the soil – this way it will be used completely and gradually, and will not evaporate into the air.

No need for excess in autumn

In the fall, fertilizer left over from spring will not work, as it contains a lot of nitrogen (N), which stimulates the growth of greenery. When preparing for winter, fertilizers containing potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) are most important for plant maturation. Phosphorus is especially necessary for perennials in order to form beautiful flowers for the next year. For roses and other ornamental shrubs, potassium will help the shoots to ripen better.

Even more important than giving autumn fertilizer is to water the plants properly.
