How to get WordPad back? Microsoft is gradually deleting it from users’ computers

This simpler replacement for Word has been available for free since Windows 95, but last year Microsoft announced that this editor is obsolete and will be removed from Windows 11. This has now been confirmed after a year. If you’ve already updated, WordPad may have disappeared from your computer.

Microsoft in a message he claimsthat you should use Word and then Notepad for simple texts: „We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like .doc and .rtf and Windows Notepad for plain text documents like .txt.“

But it’s not hard to keep WordPad. Just back up a few files or retrieve them from another computer. The best option is to back up the entire directory C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories.

Or individual files wordpad.exe, wordpadfilter.dll a wordpad.exe.mui. Some sources also mention a backup of the write.exe file located in the directory C:\Windows.

After that, the application will probably not be automatically available from the context menu, but you can create your own shortcut. Alternatively, you can forget about WordPad and download another free alternative, which will also continue to receive updates. There are LibreOffice, Google Docs and more to choose from.
