During the Olympic Games, the price of Parisian transport increases but it is possible to protect yourself (a little).

PARIS 2024 JO – A promise gone. In 2017, when Paris submitted its candidacy to host the Olympic Games in 2024, it predicted that “ all ticket holders could travel free of charge on the entire Île-de-France network”. But now, seven years later, the opposite will happen for the Paris Olympics: from July 20, 2024 until the end of the Paralympic Games, most transport tickets will cost more.

Thus, the price of the T+ ticket will almost double, going from €2.15 to €4. The same goes for the book of ten tickets: €32 during the Olympics, compared to €17.35 normally. Finally, to get from Orly airport to the capital, you will also have to expand your budget: count on €16, compared to €10.30 usually.

• No change for the classic Navigo pass

Let’s start with some good news: nearly 5 million travelers will be completely exempt from this price increase. This concerns monthly or annual subscribers to different Navigo passes : the Imagine R pass (for pupils or students residing in the Île de France), the Senior pass (intended for those over 62), or the Améthyste pass (reserved for the elderly or disabled).

For Navigo Liberté + pass subscribers, the metro ticket price also remains fixed at €1.73, with a daily ceiling of €8.65 on the total amount of journeys. Finally, beneficiaries of social pricing will be able to continue to use public transport in Île-de-France for free.

• The metro ticket goes up to 4 euros… But there are solutions

From July 20 to September 8, the T+ ticket, which allows you to use the metro, RER, buses, trams and the Montmartre Funicular, will see its price double. However, there are two solutions to get around or limit this increase.

Until July 20, T+ tickets are still priced at 2.15 euros per unit and 17.35 euros for a book of 10 tickets. So there are a few hours left to make reservations. To do this, you need to anticipate the number of trips and then go to the Île de France Mobilités application or to a ticket office to buy the number of tickets needed. On a Navigo Easy card, it is possible to buy up to 30 tickets.

As you can see in the tweet below, Île de France Mobilité also suggests a second solution to limit the increase in the price of transport: subscribe to the Freedom+ subscription. This will allow you to pay only 1.73 euros for each journey, and from the fifth journey charged the following ones are free, which caps the daily expenditure at 8.65 euros.

• In which cases should you turn to a “Paris 2024” passes

For the Olympic Games, Île de France Mobilités is setting up a “Paris 2024” pass, which may prove useful in certain cases. This package allows you to unlimited travel throughout Île-de-France. It thus provides access to all Olympic competition sites, to fans in the Paris region, but also to Orly and Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle airports and even Disneyland Paris.

This pass is sold at the price of 16 euros per day, with a decreasing rate, as you can see from the table below. So it costs 70 euros for one week and 140 euros for two weeks.

This rate can be advantageous, especially for a tourist traveling by plane. The shuttles to come from Orly or Roissy will in fact cost 16 euros, which comes to 55 euros return. If we add to that at least two return trips to Paris, the transport budget quickly exceeds 70 euros over a week.

On the other hand, instead of paying 140 euros for a two-week Olympic Pass, it is better to opt for a monthly Navigo package (from August 1) which will cost 86.40 euros and also allows unlimited use of all public transport in the Île-de-France region.

Finally, to save money, it is also possible to turn to an alternative: the bicycle. For the Games, all the Olympic sites are connected by cycle paths. No less than 10,000 new Vélib have been added to the Parisian fleet of two-wheelers, and giant temporary stations have been installed near the competition sites. It costs 3 euros for 45 minutes of cycling, but there are also day packages: 5 euros for mechanical bikes and 10 euros for electric ones.
