Spatial behavior in the organization: office space
What is the impact of the work environment on employee productivity, commitment and satisfaction? An open, functional or traditional office space? Pros and cons of different solutions for office layouts? How to increase the productivity of employees using the work environment?
When visiting Estonian public and private sector organizations, we have noticed that a lot of resources have been invested in the design of a modern work environment, and architects and designers have been involved. But involving an expert in spatial behavior and psychology is still unfamiliar. In today’s modern open offices, it is often difficult for employees to concentrate on their work.
Kadi species, MSc, Tallinn University psychology and of behavioral sciences direction organizational psychology associate professor:
“Often we simply do not notice or do not know how to notice some details of the environment design, which can affect the employee’s well-being. Some environmental conditions can harm the quality of work life, increase stress and be a contributing factor to burnout. On the other hand, they can increase the quality of working life by supporting performance and cooperation, increasing satisfaction and motivation. It is important to consider the specifics of office space layouts (e.g. open office, activity-based office, traditional office, etc.) and their good and not-so-good effects on employee performance and well-being. For example, it is possible to influence the productivity and well-being of employees with the arrangement of furniture. If a person does not feel good in his work environment, it can paralyze work performance, inhibit cooperation and commitment, as well as damage the employee’s mental health.”
How empower team?
How to empower team members in a rapidly changing world? What are science-based empowering communication techniques? How to improve team members’ communication, sense of belonging, job satisfaction and performance through empowerment?
Katrin Ava, PhD, TU long term lecturer, trainer and job counselor, of many textbooks author:
“Meaningful work that provides satisfaction depends on good relationships in collaborative networks. As a result of scientific research, it has become clear that well-functioning social networks make it possible to be sustainable in a changing environment and to solve the problems of the working environment. Empowered team members build on each other’s strengths. As a result of the training, employee satisfaction increases, solutions to difficult and stressful work situations are sought together, and the desire is to increase commonality in situations where people are left alone with their concerns..”
