How to recognize a genuine Louis Vuitton handbag

Louis Vuitton is among the most popular and also
the most counterfeit luxury brands at all. However, his goods have always been popular due to their high-quality workmanship, high durability and timelessness.

Although, unfortunately, the quality of the goods has been declining in recent years, Louis Vuitton still holds the top ranks as a recognized luxury brand. In this article, we will talk about how to verify the originality of Louis Vuitton goods.

Monogram/Damier canvas – previously indestructible material

When you hear Louis Vuitton, you probably think of a handbag from the Monogram or Damier canvas collection. If you are at least a little interested in luxury goods, you surely know that these two lines they are not made of leather, but of cotton canvas coated with several layers of PVC. This material is much more durable than leather, mainly because it is almost impossible to scratch. At least that’s how it used to be. The current modified production processes cause the canvas to crack relatively early and is more prone to abrasion.

But the ears, hems and details of these two lines are made of leather. In the case of Monogram canvas and Damier Azur canvas it is then natural calfskin – Vachetta. Vachetta is a quality expensive leather, it is sensitive to light and moisture and quickly darkens and stains. On many fakes, it is replaced by a synthetic material that looks plastic and has a uniform, unchanging color. In the better fakes, we come across smooth cowhide, but it is not soft enough and looks shiny compared to the velvety Vachetta.

Sewing and processing

A few years ago, Louis Vuitton belonged to the absolute
top in the processing and sewing of handbags and accessories.
Beautifully symmetrical and equally long individual stitches and straight seams were characteristic. Also, all logos printed or embossed at a consistent depth and perfectly centered. Newer goods lose quality due to the dynamics of production and are therefore more difficult to verify.

Date code

Each Louis Vuitton handbag is marked with a date code. But beware, this is not a unique code, but a serial number from which it is possible to read, when and where the handbag was made. Here it is possible to check whether the year and place of production read from the date code match. If the code gave nonsense, it would most likely be a fake.

Date code

It’s always good to check the code, but you can’t rely on it 100%. With older handbags, it may also happen that the date code is no longer readable or not visible at all. In addition, it is so well hidden in some handbags that you may not be able to find it.

Last but not least, it must be taken into account that the better fakes are also provided with a data code and often one that makes sense with the content.

How to learn to spot fakes

To learn it takes a lot of practice to tell the originals from the fakes. You gain the ability to evaluate the quality of the goods through constant contact with the goods and their thorough examination. Feeling and knowledge are also essential. Being an expert then means to unerringly recognize a fake of any level and to be able to reliably recognize the original. You will most likely not succeed in something like this, but you can gradually improve your skills.

Start looking carefully at your handbags. Live and in photos. Focus on the details. Start with one model, find it in proven foreign bazaars in various conditions and ages. Focus on the sewing – individual stitches and seam lines, take a good look at the hardware and the logos stamped into it. Also notice how the bag behaves, how the material softens and how it changes the shape of the bag compared to the perfectly styled product photos of the new item.

If you develop a sense of detail, it is quite possible that you will soon begin to see the differences between the studied model and its fake. The difference is always in the quality and precision of the processing. Since the workmanship of Louis Vuitton goods used to be higher, it will be easier to start with older models.
