How to stay safe on the road in winter

To ensure the safety, reliability and longevity of your summer and winter tires, it is important to consider a number of key aspects during seasonal replacement. Latvian media write about this with reference to the portal zeltene.lv.

Drivers in Latvia should remember that from October of this year it is allowed to use only tires that have special markings for winter conditions, the so-called “mountains and snowflakes” symbol. The use of universal or all-season tires that are only labeled M+S is no longer permitted. Winter tires are required from December 1st to March 1st.

Auto experts recommend taking temperature changes into account when changing tires. The optimal time to install winter tires is when the temperature consistently drops below +7 °C. During this period, summer and all-season tires that are not designed for cold weather lose their effectiveness: the rubber becomes harder, which reduces traction.

Don’t wait until the first snowfall – switching to winter tires early will help you be prepared for slippery conditions and sudden weather changes.

In spring, when the temperature regularly exceeds +7 °C and this is allowed by the rules, it is time to change to summer tires. Winter tires wear out faster on warm roads because their rubber compound is softer.

Tire sizes and characteristics

– Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Always choose the tire sizes and specifications specified by your vehicle manufacturer. This information can be found in the owner’s manual or on a sticker located on the inside of the driver’s side door.

– Speed and load indicators. Make sure your winter tires meet your vehicle’s speed and load ratings, as winter tires often have lower ratings.

– Checking the condition of the tires. Before replacing, be sure to inspect your tires for damage, cracks, or uneven wear.

– Tread depth. To guarantee good grip on snow and ice, the minimum tread depth in many European countries is 1.6 mm, and for winter tires in Latvia it is at least 4 mm. Tires with insufficient tread depth should be replaced.

– Don’t forget to check the tire pressure! Changes in temperature affect tire pressure, so after each seasonal change, check and adjust it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Why is tire rotation important?

When replacing tires seasonally, it is recommended to alternate them (change the front with the rear and vice versa) to achieve even wear, especially if you use one set for several seasons. To do this, it is worth marking the tires.

– Tire position markings. If you plan to use the same set of tires next season, mark them so you can return them to their original location or swap them as needed.

– Checking alignment and balance. It is recommended to check your wheel alignment and balance after changing your tires to ensure a comfortable ride and avoid premature wear.

Storing tires in the off-season

– Tire cleaning. Before storing, wash your tires to remove dirt, road salt and other contaminants. This will help prevent corrosion and keep your tires in good condition.

– Store in a dry and cool place. Tires are best stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

– Use bags or covers for storage. To avoid exposure to oxygen and ozone, which can damage rubber, store tires in bags or airtight covers.

By following these tips, you can extend the life of your tires, improve road safety, and ensure comfortable driving all year round.
