A picture of the latest app, photo evidence of the high score you earned or a user tip for friends: There are many occasions when a screenshot of the iPhone display can help. The screenshots are very easy to create. Depending on the model generation, there are different ways – either using a key combination or even a touch command.
Step 1: Open the desired page
Display the screen you want to take a screenshot of. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a screen from the menu or an app. The trick also works with screens in landscape format.
Step 2: Take a screenshot with iPhone 14 or later
To take a screenshot on an iPhone from generation 14 or other models with FaceID, press the side button and the volume up button and then release them again.
Alternatively, you can use a different approach, but it requires some preparation. To do this, you must first go to the settings on your iPhone. After opening Settings, do the following:
- Select the Accessibility submenu. Under the “Tap” item you will then find the “Tap on the back” selection point.
- Then click the Double Tap or Triple Tap option and choose an action. In this case “Screenshot”.
- Now tap the back of the device two or three times to perform your chosen action.
Take a screenshot with iPhone 8 or older
If you have an older iPhone like the iPhone 8 that still has TouchID, press and hold the power button on the side of the housing (or at the top right in older iPhone models and the iPhone SE) and then briefly tap Home button below the display. A brief flash and a camera shutter sound indicate that the screenshot has been taken.

Further edit and send screenshot
Screenshots are usually automatically saved to the iPhone’s image gallery. On older devices you can find the image there in the overview and can share it via various apps. Since iOS 11, the screenshot is displayed as a picture-in-picture at the bottom left after it has been taken and can be further edited immediately by tapping it. The detour via the photos app is no longer necessary.
If you just want to save the screenshot, all you need to do is swipe to the left. In order to further edit the photo (draw marks directly into the image, crop the size) and send it, it must be opened by tapping on the image. Then there are several pen tools available as well as some elements to insert such as speech bubbles, shapes, arrows and a text field. Cutting is also possible by moving the outer frame.
The image can then either be saved in the image gallery or, if no longer needed, discarded and deleted by clicking on “Done” at the top left. If the edited screenshot is to be shared, several options such as email, WhatsApp, Dropbox and iCloud sharing are available using the send symbol at the bottom left, depending on the apps and accounts installed.
