How Will AI Work in iOS 18? Apple’s Plans Leaked

Last fall, reports emerged that Apple was investing $3 million a day in developing a large, proprietary language model. Ajax would compete directly with models like OpenAI’s GPT, Google’s Gemini, and Meta’s Llama.

In May 2024, Bloomberg reported that Apple was close to finalizing a deal with OpenAI. The latest information suggests that iOS 18 will use ChatGPT-based features.

While the leaks so far seem to be mutually exclusive, there may be some justification for each.

Some of the AI ​​will be powered by a proprietary large language model running directly on the iPhone. Other AI features will be powered by a proprietary large language model in the cloud. The AI ​​chatbot will be based on ChatGPT, and potentially Gemini. Gurman says Apple has no plans to build its own AI chatbot, but is aware of the market need and is considering buying a ready-made solution.

But despite the leaked Apple plans, questions remain unanswered. If the iPhone chatbot is to be powered by a competing engine, does that mean Apple’s LLM is less advanced than GPT or Gemini? Does that also suggest that features like photo editing or web page summarization will be less effective on iPhones than on competing devices?
