HPE supercomputers rank among the most efficient and fastest systems

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced that its supercomputer they now occupy the top three places in the list of the fastest and most efficient supercomputers in the world.

Its systems enable numerous research institutions and large enterprises to handle larger workloads, accelerating discovery and innovation.

El Capitan: the most powerful supercomputer in the world

The Captainbuilt for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in collaboration with AMD, achieved 1,742 exaflops in the November 2024 edition of the TOP500, reaching first place in the ranking and becoming so the most powerful supercomputer in the world.

HPE shared the news during SC24 in Atlanta, the event dedicated to experts in supercomputing systems and scientific innovation. Among the top ten supercomputers of the TOP500, seven are based on HPE Cray Supercomputing solutions which Leverages the industry’s first 100% fanless direct liquid cooling system architecture.

El Capitan was designed to help the United States maintain its competitive advantage in national security and to promote the country’s investment in artificial intelligence.

Frontier and Aurora

In second and third place in the ranking respectively we find Frontier and Aurora, two other HPE supercomputers. Frontier, con 1,353 exaflopswas the first system in the world to break the exascale barrier in 2022. R

Made in collaboration with ORNL and AMD, Frontier ushered in the era of AI-enabled supercomputers. Supercomputing researchers are leveraging AI for a variety of topics, including cancer research, drug discovery, and designing super-efficient engines.

Next we find Aurorabuilt collaboratively by Intel and HPE, which leverages AI technologies to advance data-intensive research on aircraft design, cancer treatments and sustainable energy.

The supercomputer is used in theAurora Early Science Programa program in which several researchers are working on connectomics through 3D mapping of neuron connections in the brain. The group was nominated for a Gordon Bell Prize for their work developing a computing framework to accelerate the design of new protein sequences that can be used in vaccines or materials science.

HPE Cray Supercomputing EX powers the three most powerful systems in Europe

In Europe there are three of the most powerful systems in the world powered by HPE Cray Supercomputing EX. Among these, Eno’s HPC6 stands out, which debuted in the TOP500 at position n.5, establishing itself as the most powerful corporate supercomputer in the world. Built by HPE for Eni and located in Eni’s Green Data Center in Italy, HPC6 is used to advance discovery and engineering related to the energy transition.

Next, in seventh place, we find the supercomputer Alps of the Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS which guarantees It provides 434.9 petaflopsno. Alps is primarily used to study climate and weather, astrophysics, computational fluid dynamics, life sciences, quantum chemistry and particle physics.

It is then reported ROOM in Finland, built for EuroHPC JU and hosted by the LUMI consortium at the CSC – IT Center for Science, in eighth place in the TOP500 ranking. The supercomputer ran all the climate and weather simulations for Destination Eartha European Commission initiative to develop a highly accurate digital replica of the Earth system to inform climate change decision-making.

Finally, in tenth place in the TOP500 there is Tuolumnean El Capitan companion system built for LLNL that boasts 208.1 petaflops of performance. As an unclassified system, Tuolumne will be dedicated to open science and will be available to researchers to make advances in biotechnology, climate modeling, drug discovery and sustainable energy.

HPE Cray Supercomputing EX optimizations

HPE supercomputers are equipped with eight cooling elements that reduce the energy consumption of the cooling infrastructure by up to 94% compared to air cooling.

Additional optimizations of HPE Cray Supercomputing EX solutions includeinterconnessione HPE Slingshot liquid cooledbuilt with the Dragonfly topology, which helps you complete workloads faster and minimize overall power requirements. Additionally, HPE HPC software solutions enable customers to monitor and regulate energy usereducing energy consumption.

HPE is proud to have built supercomputers that power the modeling and simulation capabilities that enable scientists to make discoveries that benefit societythe company said. “HPC and AI workloads running on powerful supercomputers will accelerate next-breaking breakthroughs in agriculture, finance, drug discovery, healthcare, energy, weather and climate, cybersecurity, and national defense“.
