HTC’s new headsets are like the Vision Pro but at a cheaper price

A few days ago HTC announced a new headsetVR: το Vive Focus Vision. The leaked Focus Vision specs that surfaced right after its teaser trailer also turned out to be true, and therein lies a problem: HTC’s new headsets share more than just their name with a certain competitor. When it was released
the Apple Vision Pro, the company largely marketed its use as a platform for business and passive entertainment. As such, the headset didn’t support current VR games or even come with controllers. The $3,499 price tag sealed its fate, and the Vision Pro began to see poor sales and reduced production.

While the Vive Focus Vision at $999 it doesn’t even come close to Apple’s price and comes with gaming support, maybe it’s setting itself up for a disappointing future. There’s a reason Meta Quest 3 has become the go-to recommendation for anyone looking to jump into VR. Meta is pricing its headsets so insanely low that it can get early access to what it believes is the future of computing.

We should point out that the upcoming Meta Quest 3S is a headset that provides the same processing power as the Quest 3 for only $299. Meanwhile, HTC has equipped the Vive Vision Focus with the same lenses and displays as the older Vive Focus 3. Perhaps most surprisingly, it also uses the same chipset as the Focus 3: a chip even older than the one used in the Quest 3.

HTC is marketing the headset as a VR product for entertainment and business use, but there’s really no good reason to choose it over a Quest 3. According to surveys, only 25% of US adults have used VR.
