Huawei focuses on fashion and health

Huawei has introduced four new smartwatches and two tablets, including the Watch D2, the first watch that can perform outpatient blood pressure measurements.

Since the smartphone business continues to be difficult in Europe due to the US embargo on Google services and 5G chipsets, Huawei is placing a huge emphasis on wearables in this country. The Chinese are one of the leading players in this field and have a major advantage in terms of energy conservation thanks to their own HarmonyOS operating system. In addition, there is the TruSense system, which records health and fitness values.

Accordingly, Huawei presented four new smartwatches at an event in Barcelona: the Watch GT5 and its Pro version, the Watch Ultimate Green Edition and the Watch D2. There are also two new tablets, the MatePad 12X and the MatePad Pro 12.2.

The Watch D2 is particularly interesting as it is the first smartwatch that can carry out ambulatory blood pressure measurements for 24-hour monitoring, which are certified by health authorities such as NMPA and MDR. This is done using an airbag that inflates in a matter of seconds, which is said to be much more comfortable than with conventional measuring devices. In addition, the smartwatch, which also has extensive fitness functions, does not look like a medical device with its square 1.82-inch display and weighs just 84 grams. The price is 399 euros.

With the Watch GT5 series, Huawei is once again focusing on a mix of fashion and fitness. Both models come with 42 and 46 millimeter diameter AMOLED displays in three design variants, with the smaller models looking more elegant and feminine in terms of materials, while the 46 mm models are more sporty. The compact version is said to have a battery life of seven days and the larger version even two weeks.

New is the TrueSense sensor, which is responsible for the continuous monitoring of pulse and blood oxygen. The Huawei Watch GT 5 offers a vital data and health check, sports tracking and sleep recording. It is also possible to create an electrocardiogram (ECG) with the Pro versions. Prices start at 249 euros for the basic model and 379 euros for the Pro versions, which have a case made of nanocrystal ceramic in the small model and a titanium alloy in the large version.

The Watch Ultimate Green Edition is another design variant of last year’s flagship, which has a green and white ceramic bezel. New features include special training modes and course information for golfers. However, the fun costs 899 euros.

The new tablets with HarmonyOS, whose exact prices for the German market have not yet been announced, include the MatePad 12 X with a 12-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 2,800 x 1,440 pixels and a large 10,100 mAh battery. The MatePad Pro 12.2, positioned above it, has a slightly larger OLED display with PaperMatte technology to reduce annoying reflections and more memory, as well as an included QWERTY keyboard.
