Huawei is preparing a major change regarding the support of the Android operating system on its devices (especially smartphones and tablets). In 2025, it plans to fully switch to its own HarmonyOS operating system, which will replace Android and its current applications. He announced it Richard Yu, the chairman of Huawei Consumer Business Group, during the launch of the new models of the Mate 70 series, which took place on November 26, informs HuaweiCentral.
The main news is that from 2025 all new Huawei devices will come with the operating system HarmonyOS NEXT, which will exclusively contain applications developed for this system. This means that users will no longer be able to run apps from Android, which may be a big deal for some. The move represents a push for independence for the company, which has shied away from relying on Android for several years because of the tough American sanctions.
They may encounter pitfalls
HarmonyOS NEXT is built on own technologies, as self-developed core, model of artificial intelligence Pangu AI, language Cangjie and more. However, analysts warn that this transformation will be a big challenge for Huawei. Some point out that the HarmonyOS ecosystem still suffers from a lack of apps and requires more time to reaching maturity. Users may encounter problems if they are unable to use the applications they are used to.
In addition, for users outside of China, the limited availability of apps abroad can also be a drawback. On the other hand, IDC Asia-Pacific’s Will Wong points out that HarmonyOS is still in development focused mainly on the Chinese market, where Google’s ecosystem is less dominant.
Huawei has plans to develop up to 100,000 applications by 2025 for its new system, an ambitious goal that could help expand HarmonyOS beyond China. However, it will be interesting to see how the company handles the challenges ahead and whether it manages to gain the trust of users and developers.
