The Huawei Mate X6 made official with a body less than 5mm thick. when unfolded and it’s a huge upgrade over its predecessor. It has slightly bigger screens, a new set of cameras and HarmonyOS Next straight out of the box.
As with the Mate 70 series, the chipset is not mentioned but we expect a Kirin 9100, a 6nm platform.
Inside the Mate X6 is a 7.93″ foldable LTPO panel with an almost 1:1 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2,440 x 2,240 pixels. The display has a variable refresh rate of 1-120 Hz. It comes with a maximum brightness of up to 1,800 nits 1 billion colors.
The cover features a 6.45-inch LTPO OLED display with 1080p resolution. It matches the refresh rate of the foldable display, with maximum brightness increased even further to 2,500 nits.
There are four cameras on the back of the Mate X6. The main one is 50MP with variable aperture f/1.4-f/4.0 and comes from the Pura 70 Pro+, and the 48MP telephoto lens with 90mm equivalent focal length and up to 4x optical zoom is from the Mate 60 Pro. 40 MP ultrawide with AF is also available on the Pura 70 Ultra.
The fourth lens is for a hyperspectral sensor that picks up over 1.5 million colors. Its purpose is to improve the performance of other shooters and adjust color accuracy with an engine called XD Fusion.
The Huawei Mate X6 is 4.3mm wide, but it’s heavier than the Mate X5 at 239 grams. The battery capacity is either 5,110mAh or, in the case of the 16GB RAM version, 5,200mAh.
Wired charging is rated at 66W and the phone supports up to 50W wireless charging and 7.5W reverse wireless charging.
The new foldable features a redesigned antenna, dual satellite communication linked to the Chinese Beidou and Tiantong satellites, a 3D liquid-cooled vapor chamber and multiple layers of graphite, and second-generation Kunlun Glass protection for the outer screen.
Huawei has also improved the hinge for a smoother opening, and it’s also more durable because it’s apparently made from a steel material used in missiles. The Mate X6 is also IPX8 certified for water protection, and the external display can still work underwater.
The Mate X6 is one of the first products with a new operating system based on a completely new internal core. Called HarmonyOS Next, it brings a lot of AI capabilities powered by a native large language model (LLM).
Designed for multitasking, the phone features exclusive split-screen features such as taking notes while watching a video lecture, previewing and summarizing documents, and rewriting engaging texts for social media.
Only some devices will ship with HarmonyOS Next 5.0 out of the box, while the rest come with HarmonyOS 4.3, which is still based on the Android AOSP core.
Huawei offers the Mate X6 in five colors – Gray and White with a glass/plastic finish and Black, Red and Blue with a leather finish. All are available on the company’s online store with a starting price of CNY 12,999 ($1,800/€1,700) for the base 12/256GB version.
The 12/512GB variant is CNY 13,999 ($1,935/€1,835), the 16/512GB version is CNY 14,999 ($2,070/€1,950), while the 16GB + 1TB option is CNY 15,920 (€2,200 ).
The company has yet to comment on whether this phone will go global or if it will be the third foldable in the series (after the Mate X5 and Mate XT Ultimate ) that will remain exclusive to the China market.
