Huawei Watch GT5 Pro / For sport and for company

Huawei presented its smart watch this time in several versions, and next to the classic GT5 version, which follows on from its predecessors GT3 and GT4, there is also a more exclusive version of the Huawei Watch GT5 Pro.

To avoid confusion for customers, the GT5 model has three 46mm and 5 41mm versions to choose from, the GT5 Pro includes two 46mm and two 42mm versions. The 42mm version, aimed more at women, comes in a white variant with a white fluoroelastomer strap, or a very exclusive-looking white with a nano-ceramic body and strap. The larger version I tested is available in black with a fluoroelastomer strap or the more exclusive Titanium with a titanium body and strap, combined with a nano-ceramic base and, like the others, with a sapphire crystal. It is true that both exclusive versions are among the most stylish and premium smart watches on the market. Watches traditionally offer excellent battery life, a beautiful display and comprehensive monitoring of health and fitness.

As I already mentioned, the Watch GT5 Pro (46 mm) Titanium model looks very premium right out of the box. The titanium alloy and metal strap look luxurious, although you have to expect a little more weight due to this. The weight of 86 gs with the strap suggests that you will feel them on your hand, but this may not be a minus for everyone. The strap is attached with a quick release mechanism with one button on each side. Apart from the first two links, the others have a simple spring mechanism that allows you to adjust the strap to a wide range of hand sizes. Of course, you can always change the band, because the metal one is not the lightest or most comfortable for sports, and the sports band is obviously too sporty. Since the watch has a standard 22mm strap attachment, you can use one you have at home or easily find compatible models. The case is a bit flatter and more angular than previous models and adds a unique octagonal shape to it. This gives the watch a more distinctive and robust appearance, which you will definitely notice in the flood of smart watches. The scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and the inner ceramic bezel with two color tones (blue and red) add a distinctive style to the watch. On the right side, there are two buttons – a button and a rotating crown, which allows easy menu navigation or zooming in maps. By pressing the upper one, you get to the application menu, in which you can zoom by turning the button. The protection of the watch is IP69K certified, so it can withstand not only showering, washing dishes or running in the rain, but also swimming without worry, even diving to a depth of 40 meters.

On the back of the case there are integrated sensors and nanocrystalline ceramics. The watch comes with a new TruSense sensor system that improves measurement accuracy and monitors heart rate, oxygen saturation, skin temperature and sleep. On the right side of the case there is a button and a digital crown with haptic feedback that has adequate sensitivity and speed, ideally complementing the touchscreen.

The 1.43-inch AMOLED display is bright and offers a resolution of 466 × 466 pixels. That’s more than enough to see everything even in bright sunlight. The display reaches a brightness of more than 1200 nits, which means that it is easy to read in all conditions, including a sunny day. The level of detail is high enough to comfortably read small texts and graphics. Not even a trace of individual pixels that would degrade the display quality. It must be admitted that Huawei took great care of the visual experience – from icons and colorful widgets to intuitive graphics. The display is fast and responds immediately. There is also an Always-on Display mode, which allows you to always have an active display. Of course, the battery consumption increases, but in order to minimize it, some watch faces (especially those with a white background) have two display styles. When AOD mode is activated, the watch shows a darker and minimalistic version of the watch face, but when you turn your wrist towards your face or touch something, the display switches to the official screen.

The Huawei Health application also contains a number of workouts that you can practice according to. The first 3 months are free.

The watch has a built-in speaker on the right side. Although primarily used for voice calls and exercise notifications, it can also be used to listen to music. It has surprisingly good sound for a watch.

The GT5 Pro uses HarmonyOS 5, the latest version of HarmonyOS, which is still evolving and moving towards HarmonyOS Next. The reactions of the system are very smooth: the display, buttons and gestures react immediately, and the more powerful hardware has a beneficial effect on performing tasks such as opening applications, scrolling or measuring data. HarmonyOS 5 is compatible with both Android and iOS, although with some limitations, especially for Apple devices. The watch understood my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra without any problems and its connection was also very fast. Since I tested the watch before its launch, it was necessary to install a non-public version of the Huawei Health app. The watch transmits notifications and calls without any problems, and you can also make a call with it if you have a mobile phone somewhere in your bag or pocket. The sound from the watch is sufficiently loud and understandable. A software keyboard is also new, with which you can reply to a message. A fairly rich selection of applications is installed in the base, and others can be downloaded from the application store. The watch now also supports navigation with color maps and topographic details provided by the Petal Maps service. In the Huawei Health app, you’ll find a variety of watch faces that you can download, many of which are free. The application also offers workouts and health data. You have to pay for the workouts, but as a new customer you can have them for free for three months. The watch contains up to 100 exercise modes, including various less traditional activities such as parkour, motocross or e-sports. One of the most striking innovations is the golf mode, which is exclusive to the Pro model. It contains 15,000 golf courses and provides detailed information such as distance to the hole, wind direction and elevation.

A nice feature is the really high endurance, although of course it depends on how much you use the metering functions. In normal use with only normal step measurement, I charged the watch after 14 days with a battery level of 18%. When playing sports, the endurance is shortened, but considering the AMOLED display, these are still excellent values. In addition, you can charge the watch in about an hour, which is also excellent.

Although I rate the watch as excellent, unfortunately, the payment function is still missing. Huawei promises that maybe next year, so we’ll see. Otherwise, they are definitely worth considering.

PROS, CONS:

+ Design, processing, display, GPS accuracy, endurance, top-quality mode for golfers
– No payments yet
