We know: Lord of the Rings will return to the big screen. Exit the Fellowship of the Ring, the Elves and the Dwarves, focus on a Hobbit, or rather, an ex-Hobbit well known to Tolkien fans: Gollum. But according to Empire, it seems that The Hunt for Gollum isn’t the only Lord of the Rings film coming up. Indeed, a second feature film would be planned, information lost in the meanders of the different translations.

At the start of the year, Warner Bros pulled out all the stops and announced several Lord of the Rings films. To be sure that fans of Peter Jackson’s trilogies would respond, Warner managed to convince the New Zealand director and producer and his production team, as well as some familiar faces. Cult characters from the film franchise must return to our screens, a boon for those who would like a return to the roots for the saga.
But while The Hunt for Gollum was envisaged as a film in two parts, the fault of an interview with Ian McKellen, the interpreter of Gandalf, it will ultimately be nothing of the sort. It’s the surprise of this weekend, thanks to a clarification from Phillippa Boyens, screenwriter of Lord of the Rings. In an interview with Empire, she said there would be two separate films. “I can tell you with certainty that there are no two films. This is a real misunderstanding that happened because we started working, conceptually, on two different live-action films. The first is The Hunt For Gollum, the second remains to be confirmed.”
Boyens took the opportunity to reassure the most worried, who might worry that the story of The Hunt for Gollum is shorter than expected:
“This is a pretty intense story, taking place after Bilbo’s birthday party and before the Mines of Moria. This is a specific part of an incredible untold story, told from the perspective of this incredible creature.”
And if Ian McKellen could have thought that The Hunt for Gollum would be in two parts, which is normal if we believe the screenwriter. “We have several ideas in mind, but most of them include Gandalf” she explains. If we are to believe her words, Gandalf could therefore return for two live-action films. In addition, Boyens also serves as screenwriter and producer on The Rohirrim Warthe animated film scheduled for next December. If the film is a success, another animated film to be validated, especially since a “absolutely awesome second movie that would be just amazing as an anime” is already in the pipeline.
