The machines are to support soldiers in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions, where the Russian offensive is currently underway, and after the holidays, an additional one may be launched from the Bryansk and Kursk regions, i.e. the Russian border with Ukraine. Official data shows that Russians produced about 600 tanks in 2023 and additionally about 200 were renovated. The Kremlin wanted to achieve production at the level of 2,000 units, but as we can see, this is unrealistic and will not become a reality this year either.
T-90M tanks are considered by Ukrainians to be average machines. Vehicles worth $5 million each have already been destroyed by hand-held launchers and drones, and even a few times they were neutralized only by an ordinary unguided anti-tank grenade launcher AT4 from SAAB, costing about $1,500. Russian soldiers themselves complain about this Russian type of armored fist.
In new models, to save money, they don’t even install air conditioning, without which you can literally boil on board the machine on hot summer days. The tank entered service at the end of 2021. Russia had only 67 of these machines before the attack on Ukraine. During the war, production was increased, but the Ukrainians have still managed to damage or destroy more than 100 units of this vehicle.
The T-90M is the latest, modernized version of the Russian T-90 main battle tank. (implemented in 1993), which was created in the Heavy Machinery Design Bureau (KBTM) as a result of development work codenamed “Proryw-3”. The T-90M was equipped with a modernized 125 mm 2A46M-5 smoothbore gun, adapted to use the new 3BM70 long shells. There was also a new fire control system and a remotely controlled weapon module with a machine gun on the turret roof.
The armor was also reinforced with the installation of modules. new reactive armor “Relikt” on the hull and turret, and bar armor at the rear. The T-90M also has a new, welded turret of a changed design. A new 1,130 hp V-92S2 diesel engine with an automatic transmission and an APU generator is also installed.
