Hundreds of people attended Matilda Lorenzi’s funeral in the town of Javeno.

Lorenzi lost her fight for her life after falling in training, succumbing to serious injuries on Tuesday. The Italian skiing talent was only 19 years old. Her family spoke about their tragic loss.

“She was an incredible sister,” Lucrezia Lorenzi said shortly after she had to say goodbye to Matilde, who was seven years younger.

“I will especially like to remember that she was happy and successful on skis.” The relationship between the two sisters was very warm, they both loved skiing. “Her soul is in mine, we shared many things and were very close.

Father Adolfo Lorenzi told Gazzetta dello Sport that the family did not want any flowers for the funeral. It took place on Thursday morning in the town of Javeno, 35 kilometers west of Turin, and was attended by hundreds of people.

According to him, instead of flowers, people should donate to the Project in memory of Matilda, which is supposed to increase the safety of skiers on the slopes.

“We believe that what happened to Matilda must be an opportunity,” said Adolfo Lorenzi. “The flowers only last a week, the project takes longer.”

Specifically, he has in mind the creation and implementation of a soft airbag that would be used in technical disciplines. Unlike speed races, where airbags are mandatory in the World Cup starting this season, there is no special protection in slalom and giant slalom.

“We have to have a device that better protects the skier at the moment of impact,” explained Lorenzi. The father of the poor skier added that the family does not blame anyone for the tragedy. According to him, Matilda received the best possible help after the fall. “There is nothing or anyone to complain about.”

Despite the great sadness, the family is also thinking of others at this time. “We believe it is a fate that could have befallen other athletes. That’s why we believe that something needs to be done,” stated Adolfo Lorenzi.

Poor Matilde was the best daughter for him. “She wasn’t just a skier. She always studied, read, tried to be informed about everything with an enviable curiosity. She wanted to discover the world and above all to understand it,” he added.
