Like many countries of a similar size, Hungary must also pay very serious attention to the space sector, and serious programs for young people that stimulate the entire scientific life, such as the UniSpace program, must be launched, said the ministerial commissioner responsible for space research in Budapest on Saturday. at the Globe Festival.
Orsolya Ferencz, member of parliament from Fidesz and a space researcher, spoke about the fact that in Hungary in 2018, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Foreign Affairs reorganized the sector and created the space strategy for 2021, which was also adopted by the government.
The representative talked about the UniSpace program, which was launched by the cooperation of 21 universities, since all kinds of scientific fields are involved in the research of outer space, from the natural sciences through the engineering sciences to medical, physiological, pharmaceutical studies, or social science disciplines such as security policy, diplomacy or the law – they wrote in the statement.
In the information, it was highlighted: the launch of the HUNOR program, which started in 2021, was justified by motivating young people, keeping them at home or even inviting them home, as well as the fact that manned flight is important to Hungary as a field of space research. Orsolya Ferencz spoke about the fact that serious conditions had to be met when entering the program: a flight medical license, a high level of language skills, and a diploma were required.
Even so, 247 applicants successfully submitted their applications, of which four candidates were selected by March of last year with whom they could start the training
– recalled Orsolya Ferencz.
He said that on May 26 of this year – coincidentally, almost exactly when the rocket lifted off with Bertalan Farkas in 1980 – the experts selected the two of the four candidates, Tibor Kapu and Gyula Cserényi, with whom the last stage of the training began and who are currently They are training in Houston.
One of the goals of the program is to strengthen innovation and research, he said. The other is to make Hungary more visible in the international world for international partners. The latter has already been fulfilled, as the Hungarians were the first of the European Space Agency countries to start a joint research and research astronaut program with Axiom Space, he said.
