Hungary’s competitiveness is harmed by the fact that students are bad at math

“The high proportion of low performers in mathematics, especially among disadvantaged students, limits Hungary’s competitiveness and innovation capacity,” reads the report published by the European Commission. Education and Training Monitor in 2024 reports

According to the EU report, quoted by hvg.hu – because the PISA measurements show that approximately three out of ten Hungarian students perform poorly in mathematics, and one in four in reading comprehension and natural sciences. The situation is even more devastating among poorer students, as more than half of the students, 54.9 percent, perform poorly in mathematics.

According to the document, the cause of inequality is to be found in the organization of the education system. “Among all students in the EU, disadvantaged students in Hungary most often go to school separately from their more advantaged peers, and this segregation is also reflected in their achievements,” reads the report.

The proportion of the best performing students has been stagnant since 2012. According to the report, the growing shortage of teachers is also the cause of the decline in the quality of education. The rapporteurs also point out that Hungary has the lowest teachers’ salaries among OECD EU countries, and the proportion of early school leavers is well above the EU average.
