Hyundai Cities in Motion Exploring Urban Sustainability

Hyundai Motor Company has launched its original series “Cities in Motion”, a digital series that explores the innovative solutions that various cities are implementing to address urban environmental challenges and promote sustainability.

The “Cities in Motion” series is now available on the YouTube de Hyundai Worldwidewith episodes covering cities such as London, Frankfurt, Jakarta and Los Angeles.

Sustainability in Cities: an Urgent and Necessary Challenge

The launch of “Cities in Motion” by Hyundai focuses on an alarming fact: although urban areas cover only 2% of the earth’s surface, they are responsible for 70% of greenhouse gas emissions, consume 80% of the energy, use 75% of the natural resources and generate more than half of the world’s waste. Against this backdrop, Hyundai Motor asks the following question: “How can cities be more sustainable?”

To answer this question, Hyundai has teamed up with sustainability presenter James Stewart and the organization Voice for Naturefounded by environmental activist David de Rothschild.

Together, aboard the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 electric vehicles, they embarked on a tour of the cities of London, Frankfurt, Jakarta and Los Angeles to take a closer look at how these cities are leading the transition towards a more sustainable future.

“Cities in Motion”: a journey through global sustainability

Each episode of the “Cities in Motion” series highlights specific solutions these cities are implementing to address their environmental challenges.

From creating urban green spaces in London to fighting plastic pollution in Jakarta, the series reflects the global effort to build more sustainable cities.

Episode 1: London and its urban forests

The first episode of the series focuses on London and its commitment to the creation of urban green spaces, one of the most effective initiatives to improve air and water quality, while promoting people’s health and biodiversity.

Global non-profit organization SUGi has created small “pocket forests” in the city and encourages children’s participation in tree planting, ensuring that these initiatives are passed on to future generations.

Hyundai, through its Hyundai IONIQ Forest project, is also expanding the creation of sustainable forests around the world since 2016.

Episode 2: Frankfurt, a leading city in sustainable urban planning

In the second episode, the series moves to Frankfurt, a city that has set ambitious sustainability goals, such as becoming a climate-neutral city by 2035 and achieving completely renewable energy use by 2050.

Sustainable mobility is key in this transition, and the city offers extensive infrastructure for bicycles, hydrogen trains, autonomous electric buses and, of course, electric vehicles such as the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6. Additionally, homes in Frankfurt are designed to take advantage of renewable energies such as solar, wind and geothermal.

Episode 3: Jakarta and the fight against plastic

The third episode addresses the serious problem of plastic pollution in Jakarta, one of the main sources of pollution in its rivers. Aboard the IONIQ 6, made from recycled and sustainable materials, the filmmakers explore how local social enterprises are contributing to waste management.

Hyundai Motor, in partnership with Save the Children, has launched a circular economy education program for children, as part of the Hyundai Continue initiative.

Episode 4: Los Angeles and the future of renewable energy

The last episode of the series takes place in Los Angeles, a city seeking a total transition towards sustainable energy. The city’s goal is to achieve 100% zero-emission vehicles by 2050 and a fully renewable electricity grid by 2045.

One organization prominent in this effort is GRID Alternatives, which is dedicated to providing low-cost solar energy to the most vulnerable communities.

Hyundai is supporting these efforts through its Hyundai Home service, which allows the installation of solar energy systems to charge electric vehicles in remote areas, without relying on the electrical grid.

Hyundai’s commitment to sustainability

Through “Cities in Motion”, Hyundai Motor not only highlights the sustainable efforts of these four great cities, but also reaffirms their commitment to a cleaner, more efficient future.

“We are proud to highlight global environmental initiatives and demonstrate Hyundai’s commitment to a sustainable future for humanity and the planet,” said Sungwon Jee, Senior Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer of Hyundai Motor Company.

The central message of the series is clear: although cities face significant challenges, they are continually working to implement positive changes that benefit both their communities and the environment. Hyundai, with its vision of “Progress for Humanity”, continues to promote sustainability on a global scale.
