The Korean automaker has unveiled the hydrogen-powered Initium concept, which introduces a new design language. The concept will be the basis of the new Hyundai Nexo.
The successor to the Hyundai Nexo has been officially unveiled, offering a glimpse of the company’s new design language. The hydrogen-powered concept will give rise to the crossover that will replace the current Nexo in the Korean manufacturer’s lineup.
The new hydrogen-powered concept of the Korean manufacturer promises a maximum autonomy of 650 km. The name of the concept is quite suggestive of Hyundai’s future plans. Initium means “beginning” or “first” in Latin, being a reference to the fact that Hyundai wants to be a pioneer in the development of hydrogen-based propulsion systems. In September of this year, the company concluded a collaboration agreement with Skoda for the development of hydrogen propulsion technologies.
The Initium concept offers a first glimpse of a new hydrogen-powered production model that Hyundai Motor plans to unveil in the first half of next year. It looks like we’re dealing with the Nexo’s successor, and Hyundai is capitalizing on the popularity of SUVs with its new design.
The new hydrogen-powered SUV will use a more efficient propulsion system
The new design language used on the Initium concept is called “Art of Steel” and combines design elements from the Ioniq 5, Santa Fe and Inster. The concept has a robust appearance with plastic guards, protective shields, straight surfaces and large rims. The Initium is equipped with 21-inch rims, but we intuit that the series version will receive somewhat smaller diameter ones.
Although it didn’t provide photos of the car’s interior, Hyundai promises a spacious, family-friendly interior. The manufacturer also says that the car will be equipped with nine airbags and a durable structure.
The SUV will be set in motion by an electric motor that develops 204 HP, and the large hydrogen tanks will ensure a maximum autonomy of about 650 km, according to the manufacturer.
