Hyundai has revealed THE BEGINNINGhis latest concept for hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), on the occasion of the event “Clearly Committed” at Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang, South Korea. The name “INITIUM”, derived from the Latin “beginning”, reflects the company’s ambition to lead a hydrogen-based era and its commitment to sustainable mobility. This innovative concept represents a synthesis of 27 years of development in hydrogen technology and anticipates the series production model expected for the first half of next year.
The aesthetics of INITIUM introduces the new stylistic language “Art of Steel“, inspired by the HTWO division of Hyundai Motor Groupdedicated to the development of hydrogen. SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design, explained how INITIUM’s artistic approach to design pushes the malleability of steel to the limits to create a robust, elegant and recognizable form. The SUV combines a solid structurerefined lines and functionality, perfect for everyday use and outdoor adventures, thanks to a sturdy roof rack and 21-inch wheels.
Autonomy al top
Hyundai INITIUM stands out not only for its design, but also for its performance. Advanced fuel cell technology ensures an autonomy of more than 650 kmguaranteed by large-capacity hydrogen tanks, low-resistance tires and wheels optimized to reduce friction. There motorization offers a power of 150 kWallowing rapid acceleration, safe overtaking and a smooth driving experience in the city and on the highway.
The spacious and versatile passenger compartment is designed for families: the reclining seats in the second row and the large interior space offer comfort and practicality, while the opening angle of the rear doors facilitates access. A the distinguishing element of the beginning is the FCEV route planning system, which identifies hydrogen refueling stations along the route, with access to updated information on availability and waiting times.
There is Vehicle-to-Load
Another innovative feature of INITIUM is functionality Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), which allows you to power electrical devices thanks to the clean energy produced by fuel cells. This function, made possible by an external 220V socket, makes INITIUM a mobile energy source, ideal for supporting outdoor activities or for emergencies.
For Hyundai, safety remains a priority. There reinforced structure di STARTenriched by multi-skeleton protection and nine airbags, meets the highest safety standards. Hyundai’s goal is to offer a vehicle that protects passengers in every situation, both on and off-road.
A series model in 2025
Hyundai will introduce INITIUM at the Los Angeles Auto Show and Auto Guangzhou in November, further solidifying its leadership position in hydrogen mobility. This concept represents a significant step towards the production of a series model, scheduled for 2025.
During the event, Hyundai held a “Hydrogen Heritage Talk”, retracing the 27 years of research and innovation that led to the creation of INITIUM. From the Mercury and Polaris projects to the first mass-produced hydrogen FCEV, Hyundai continues to explore the potential of hydrogen, confirming its commitment to a sustainable future.
