Victor Ponta confirmed on Wednesday, January 8, that he does not want to run for the presidential elections in 2025. “I want to see what Marcel Ciolacu will do,” said the former prime minister, adding that he will support the PSD president if he runs.

“This coalition was formed, I don’t even think it could be another. PSD chose the position of prime minister and did well. PNL said that it also wants the presidential candidate. When the UDMR was given, Hunor came with Antonescu. We have to think very seriously about which president we want to propose. I think there may be a candidate, among those announced now, I don’t see who could get us out of the crisis and work with the government. When the candidates will be announced and when the election date will be set, then I will tell you. I have an obligation to Marcel Ciolacu – if he runs again, I will support him. But I think he should remain prime minister. I have no obligation to anyone else. I hope he doesn’t run”, Victor Ponta told Digi24.

Ponta explained that he considers himself a very good prime minister and that the “war” with Iohannis meant that his government was not viewed very positively.

“If they want to have a common candidate just to be quiet in the coalition, one who doesn’t enter the second round, it’s a shame. Or they may have a likely candidate. It is important for the safety of the government that the future president works with the Government, not being an adversary. Because we’re going to enter a different kind of political war. In 2015, I took the best measures for the economy. But the fact that we entered into a war with Iohannis did not help,” the former prime minister also said.

“I want to see what Marcel Ciolacu will do”, concluded Victor Ponta regarding the upcoming presidential elections in 2025.
