“I think our folks put something in our food”

Marius Baciu (49 years old), former defender of Stella and the national team, told what happened in the duel with PSG in 1997, considered by many to be the most suspicious match in the European history of the red-blue team.

After a 3-0 record in the tour, at the “green table”, the stars presented themselves miserably in Paris and lost with an incredible 0-5, a result that eliminated them from the competition.

Marius Baciu also gave his opinion on the controversial match PSG – Steaua Bucharest, from 1997

Marius Baciu represented the football club Steaua Bucharest for 6 seasons, between 1996 and 2002, and was part of the team that played in the controversial double with PSG in the Champions League.

The confrontation took place in 1997 and was remembered by many as one of the most controversial in Stella’s European history. In fact, even the opinions of those who took part in the event were divided. Valeriu Răchită suggested that the match could have been influenced from the outside, arguing bluntly: “I say there was no way they were ever going to beat us 5-0 unless something foul happened.”

Instead, Laurențiu Reghecampf had a completely different opinion about the accusations of cheating from PSG – Steaua 5-0 and transmitted: “This with the counter seems silly to me.”

And different opinions continue to emerge regarding the controversial PSG – Steaua 5-0 match, as Marius Baciu hinted in a recent interview that the red-blues could have been sabotaged from within:

My first press conference in France (no as a Lille player) I was asked by the French journalists if that match was rigged. I don’t know what to say, I am firmly convinced that it was heard until now. I would like to think that PSG were very, very good and so were we, at that time. We ate before the match at the Embassy, lest they poison us. I think our folks put something in our food, God knows what happened. In Ghencea, I think they took us a little too high, they were very sure of qualification. I felt from the beginning on the field, in Paris, that we had no chance, I am also referring to the refereeing. All forces were against us then. We were too small for such a big game. I can’t believe that a colleague of mine stepped aside”, declared Marius Baciu, la the “SportCast with Sile” podcast.

Marius Baciu left Steaua for Lille in July 2002

LOSC Lille was the first formation outside the borders that Marius Baciu ticked off in his football career. After the expiration of his contract with Steaua in 2002, he went to France, where he stayed for two seasons, until July 2004.

He then arrived in Germany, where he represented Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, after which he signed with Panserraikos, from Greece. In 2006 he returned to Romania. He played for Oțelul, U Cluj and Gaz Metan, and in 2008 he hung up his boots.
