Jude Law received an Oscar nomination for 2003’s Cold Mountain. He then moved on to remake Michael Caine’s 1966 comedy Alfie. It was a bad move.
Alfie, completed in 2004, flopped badly in terms of ticket sales, and the film didn’t win viewers over either. In his recent interview, Jude Law, who played the title role of Alfie, calls the film a clear mistake.
“Alfie felt a little too light and sweet. It was done for too much money and I was overpaid for it, although I underestimated it back in the day. I later scolded myself for making a movie that relied on heart palpitations and a charismatic lead and it didn’t work,” Law recalled In an interview with GQ.
Law also admits that Alfie’s flopping took a toll on his self-esteem.
“Everyone has hits and everyone has flops. But yeah, I think Alfie influenced me. It also taught me that everyone is after a fresh face. All it takes is a couple of shots and the interest disappears. After that, you think about how to get attention back to yourself”.
Jude Law will next star in the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew series, which will premiere in December.
