Kevin Behrens apologized for his behavior.

The 33-year-old forward of the Bundesliga team VfL Wolfsburg refused to sign the rainbow jersey symbolizing support for diversity and inclusion. According to the German newspaper Bild, when refusing to sign, the native of Bremen addressed the club’s employees with the words: “I will not sign such Teploska s…y.”

Despite his initial stance, he later agreed to sign. The rainbow jersey was introduced five years ago and is part of an initiative by the club and its sponsor to promote diversity on and off the pitch. This jersey aims to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ communities and fight against discrimination.

After causing controversy, the club held an internal meeting where Behrens was summoned to explain his statements. After the meeting, he stated that he has no aversion to homosexuals.

“My spontaneous comments were completely out of line. I would like to apologize for that. This topic was clearly discussed internally, and I ask for your understanding that I do not want to comment on it further,” added the footballer, who became famous in the media some time ago for moving from home to training sessions on a bicycle.

The German’s words still raised questions about his true stance on LGBTQ+ issues. The club itself also gave its opinion: “VfL Wolfsburg emphasizes that it is aware of its social responsibility. The club and its employees stand for diversity and tolerance, and core values such as respect, honesty and openness have always been firmly embedded in the club’s philosophy.”

Behrens plays only sporadically in the “Wolves” jersey in the current Bundesliga season. In the 2024/2025 edition, he started from the bench in only three duels. However, he is one of the oldest and most experienced players in the team. In the past, he also wore the jerseys of Hannover, Essen, Sandhausen, Union Berlin and was also briefly part of the German national team. Slovak national defender Denis Vavro has been his teammate in Wolfsburg since the summer.
