Bass player of the group Judas Priest, Ian Hillemphasized the importance of attracting a new audience considering that their original fans are slowly “disappearing.”
In an interview with an Idaho radio station, The PickHill explained how his band manages to keep its new material relevant after all these decades of career.
“That’s something we always try to do – to take a step forward with each album,” the bassist explained. “We are constantly learning something new, and everything we learn we try to apply in the next project. We’ve been doing this since the very beginning, since the early ’70s. It’s important to do that because it keeps you modern and relevant.”
According to Hill, this approach to new music helped Judas Priest to expand their audience, even when their first fans have drifted away over time.
“We somehow manage to connect with the younger fans, which is important. The original fans are our age and they’re slowly disappearing,” noted Hill. “But we managed to connect with the younger ones. When we look out from the audience, we see people in their late teens, or twenties, and they’re enjoying themselves. They don’t just like new things — they also sing old songs, 20, 30 years old. They are interested in our history and are researching our earlier material. It’s great news, not only for us, but for metal in general, because new people are still interested in it.”
Judas Priest are planning an extensive tour for 2025, with dates across Europe and South America.
