ICANN Empowers Underrepresented Communities with New gTLD Application Support Program

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced the launch of its new Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLD) Program, Next Step, through its Application Support Program (ASP). This new initiative aims to increase diversity by allowing gTLDs longer than three characters or non-Latin alphabets to be added to the internet domain name field. Thanks to the new Application Support Program (ASP), institutions with limited financial resources will have the opportunity to establish a presence in the digital world with special gTLDs and will benefit from discounts of up to 85%.

ASP, which supports equal opportunity on the Internet and offers the opportunity to create space for more businesses, entrepreneurs and communities in the digital world, aims to facilitate gTLD access for institutions with limited financial and other resources. Applicants accepted into the program will receive a 75-85% discount on gTLD evaluation fees, as well as access to pro bono services, training and other support resources. With this support, it is aimed to enable more entrepreneurs, small businesses and communities to benefit from the opportunities in this field.

ASP: Support Program Providing Equal Opportunities in the Digital World

ICANN Stakeholder Relations Middle East Vice President and MEA Istanbul Office General Manager Baher Esmat said the following about the APS program: “The new gTLD Program allows commercial businesses, communities and other stakeholders to better address their target audiences with custom domain names. “This program, powered by ASP, once again demonstrates ICANN’s commitment to promoting innovation, competition and consumer choice.” Esmat also noted that ASP will allow more entrepreneurs, small businesses, nonprofits and communities around the world to apply to operate a generic top-level domain of their choice.

Organizations applying for the program must meet financial need and eligibility criteria and be non-profit organizations, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), indigenous/tribal peoples’ organizations, social impact or public benefit micro or small businesses, or micro or small enterprises in underdeveloped economies. They must be included in at least one of the categories such as businesses. The application process will remain open for 12 months and applications will be evaluated as they arrive. In this way, the first applicants who meet the conditions will receive priority to benefit from available resources.
