Technology evolves and with it the technical requirements of devices to run certain software. If you are an Apple user you already know this. From time to time, older devices stop supporting newer updates and gradually lose functionality until they are finally declared obsolete. The same thing happens with services and today we know one more example of this. Apple has announced that iCloud will no longer support backups for iPads and iPhones running iOS 8 or earlier. We tell you all the information below.

iPhones and iPads with iOS 8 or earlier will not have iCloud backups

iOS 9 was a big change in 2015, the year it was officially launched. A big change especially at the level of iCloud since it was integrated for the first time the CloudKit module for developers. This new API allowed developers more simplicity because they did not need their own infrastructure to store data, but rather it was stored in Apple’s own cloud as well as integration with iCloud to synchronize all information between devices. In fact, device backups could be stored in iCloud and then restore them to a new device without the need for iTunes and connecting it to a computer.

However, Apple is going to put an end to this trend in older software. a few hours ago announced to the developers who iCloud stopped supporting backups of iPhone and iPad with operating systems equal to or older than iOS 8. This will take place from December 18, 2024, at which point all these backups will be deleted from the Big Apple servers.

The apps and data stored in iCloud will be affected and the solution that Apple offers these users to make backup copies is that Physical backups can still be made on macOS and Windows computers. The reason for this termination of support? For Apple it is clear:

This is to more closely align with our published minimum software requirements. Until this date, you will be able to use the service normally. Afterwards, your backup data will be deleted unless you update to iOS 9 or later.
