In the TV24 program “Dienas personība” the Chief of the State Police Armands Rooks spoke about a new initiative – to introduce identification numbers on police uniforms. This approach will allow for the identification of police officers while protecting their personal privacy and safety, especially in light of the growing hatred towards law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
Rooks notes that uniform numbers will not only promote transparency in the system, but will also help citizens identify a specific police officer if the need arises.
“These numbers will be carried by police officers while on duty and will allow identification of a specific officer should any questions or complaints arise“, Armands Rooks explained.
However, officers will still have to follow certain procedural steps: “When stopping a vehicle or in any other situation, the officer must present identification, especially if the person asks for it».
Speaking about the reasons for this initiative, Rooks mentions the need to protect employees and their families from hatred and humiliation:
«We have encountered manifestations of hatred against representatives of our profession. Physical appearance is ridiculed; our colleagues, their children and family members are found on social networks».
The police chief emphasizes that uniform numbers will ensure police officers can be identified at public events if necessary, while at the same time protecting their privacy.
