If China goes after Taiwan, we’ll cut off TSMC, says U.S. deputy

Donald Trump’s nominee for US Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby has somewhat controversial views. In his term of office, he will try to implement the “Broken Nest” plan. The Army College came up with this term in 2021. In the extensive document, it is described that Taiwan is only interesting for China because of the semiconductor plants, especially TSMC.

Colby describes in his thread on X that it is entirely logical that in the event of an open conflict between Taiwan and China, America would liquidate the TSMC factories in Taiwan. Furthermore, the nominated deputy says that this step should be a priority of the US Department and should not be decided by Taiwan alone. This slightly reminds me of the situation in the Eastern Hemisphere, why should a free state decide for itself, right?

In short, it’s a simple equation, if China invades Taiwan, it will probably do so because of TSMC, which it will want to take over. Therefore, if the US destroys it in such a case, China will have nothing to fight for. Simple, right? However, this plan runs into complications. China would likely seek to protect the technology facilities from attack, and Taiwan’s defense minister last year dismissed the possibility that the US could destroy TSMC without Taiwan’s consent.

Colby also calls for a significant increase in Taiwan’s defense budget from 2.5% to 5% of GDP and calls for the US to arm Taiwan more instead of Ukraine. He argues that Europe should be more involved in supporting its neighboring country.
