It was found that people with constipation have a greater risk of heart attack or stroke than the general public. This possibility increases especially if you have high blood pressure.
According to a press release from the American Physiological Society, people with constipation are twice as likely to develop serious heart health problems compared to people with normal bowel habits. The odds of having heart failure were 2.7 times higher, the odds of having a stroke were 2.4 times higher, and the odds of having a heart attack or chest pain were 1.6 times higher.
A research team led by Dr. Teng Hao Zheng of St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, analyzed health data from more than 400,000 people who participated in the UK Biobank research project. The biobank includes electronic health records, lifestyle surveys, self-reported health conditions and medication use. More than 157,400 of the participants had high blood pressure and 8.6% were diagnosed with constipation.
The researchers found that 11.5% of those analyzed experienced at least one major adverse cardiac event, with a much higher proportion of men (67.3% of all cardiovascular disease cases). The overall rate of constipation was higher in women (55.9% of all cases).
The study found a link between constipation and heart health emergencies, especially among participants with high blood pressure. People with constipation and high blood pressure were found to have a 68% higher risk of developing serious heart health problems than those with only high blood pressure.
They also discovered that constipation has some genetic similarities with the heart. In particular, constipation is a genetic trait that accounts for only about 4%, but shares 21-27% of genetic variation with heart disease.
“We identified constipation as a potential risk factor independently associated with an increased prevalence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE),” the researchers said in a press release.
The study was published in the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology under the title ‘Constipation Is Associated with an Increased Risk of Major Adverse Cardiac Events in a UK Populatio’.
