“If you like it so much, sign it yourself.” Why no one in F1 wants Michael Schumacher’s son to race for their team

A new driver has been confirmed for the Formula 1 grid in 2025. Liam Lawson will race with the Racing Bulls team next season, and that means that there is only one free spot left, that of Sauber, for which Franco Colapinto, Gabriel Bortoleto and Valtteri Bottas sound. That is to say, one more year Mick Schumacher is going to be left out of Formula 1.

Michael Schumacher’s son came to Formula 1 as one of the most promising future drivers, but just two years at Haas seem to have served to burn his entire reputation. Up to three Formula 1 teams had him as an affordable option, but all of them have preferred to bet on a rookie. Nobody wants Mick Schumacher in Formula 1.

Mercedes, Alpine and Williams had Schumacher on hand, but chose a rookie

One more year, Mick Schumacher is going to have to stay on the bench. Not even getting his first podium in the WEC a few weeks ago, finishing third with Alpine in the 6 Hours of Fuji, has served to convince anyone. The Formula 1 grid for 2025 is almost closed and, at 25 years old, it seems that Mick Schumacher is already past.

The feeling is that nobody trusts Schumacher. The son of ‘El Kaiser’ is a Mercedes test driver and races in the WEC with Alpine, two brands that have been left with a vacant position in Formula 1. But Mercedes preferred to bet on a rookie like Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Alpine opted for another rookie, Jack Doohan.

A third route opened in Williams. When the English team fired Logan Sargeant, he quickly Toto Wolff called his former partner James Vowlesnow head of Williams, to place Mick Schumacher there in the last races of 2024. But Vowles has preferred to bet on another rookie, Colapinto, and the results are visible.

The Mercedes boss even publicly pressured the Williams boss to accept Schumacher, and Vowles’ response was forceful: “If Toto likes Mick so much, Mercedes has a free spot“Schumacher is not special,” Vowles concluded hotly.

And it seems that Schumacher’s only two years at Haas have burned out his career in Formula 1. Not because of a lack of speed, which was not enough either, achieving only twelve points in 43 races, but because Schumacher gained a certain reputation for destroying carsand created a big economic hole for Haas along with Nikita Mazepin.

At 25 years old, it seems that Formula 1 has eaten up the sporting career of Michael Schumacher’s son. If he has not found a place for a 2025 in which there will almost certainly be five rookies, he will probably never return.
